Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies MLB Betting Series Preview

By Mike Rose

A pair of teams flirting with a spot in the playoffs will partake in a crucial series to kick off the week when the Pittsburgh Pirates invade Coors Field to match wits with the Colorado Rockies. The Buccos likely have no shot to win the NL Central that’s been dominated by both the Cubs and Brewers. The Rockies are in the thick of the NL West race sitting 2 games out as well as 2.5 games out in the wild card chase. Without saying, this is a pivotal series for both clubs for a number of reasons.

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Colorado Rockies

Dates: Monday, August 6 – Wednesday, August 8, 2018
Location: Coors Field, Denver, CO

The Pirates caught fire following the All-Star break rattling off five straight wins and seven of nine to get the team off life support. Unfortunately, Clint Hurdle’s squad was unable to carry that momentum into the following week after splitting with Chicago at home and following it up with a crucial series loss at home to St. Louis over the weekend. Pittsburgh sits two games under .500 on the road for the season ( $195 ).

Like this series’ opponent, the Rockies bolted out of the gates in the second half taking two of three from the D’backs in the desert and followed it up by taking four of five against the Astros and A’s. all three of those teams are playoff worthy. Then the gas ran out. Nolan Arenado and his mates went on to drop three of four at St. Louis and then followed it up with a terrible series loss at Milwaukee over the weekend. As competitive the NL West is this season, they can’t afford to slip up in this home series.

Game 1 Probable Pitchers – Monday, August 6, 2018, 8:40 p.m. ET ( Local TV )

Joe Musgrove vs. Kyle Freeland

Musgrove enters start No. 12 of 2018 the owner of a 4-5 record and nifty 3.63 ERA. He’s proven to be an innings eater for a Buccos starting staff that ranks No. 9 overall in the quality starts department. He’s gone seven innings in four of his last five trips to the starting bump, and each of his two second half starts have been of quality. This will be his first career start against the Rockies and first appearance in Coors.

Every year, there’s a pitcher on the Rockies staff that defies Coors Field logic. That arm this season is none other than Kyle Freeland who stands 6-2 with an impressive 2.45 ERA and .223 BAA in the thin air of the Mile High City. Colorado had won each of his five previous starts until he dropped a decision in St. Louis last Wednesday. The Rockies have won seven of his nine overall home starts, but he’s had issues with the Redbirds in going 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA and .360 BAA through two career starts.

Game 2 Probable Pitchers – Tuesday, August 7, 2018, 8:40 p.m. ET ( Local TV )

Jameson Taillon vs. Antonio Senzatela

Taillon leads the team in ERA ( 3.74 ) and WHIP ( 1.22 ), but has only managed to go 8-8 through his 22 overall starts. Injuries have once again plagued the youngster, but he’s been solid since the All-Star break after tossing 19 combined innings of 6 ER ball at the Reds, Indians and Cubs. He’ll be tested in this one with it being his first career start at Coors Field. Pittsburgh’s 6-5 with him leading the way on the road where his ERA checks in at 3.59 and BAA at .255.

Senzatela doesn’t offer up much to get excited about. He’s at best a six inning pitcher and is the owner of a 7.0 K/9 average. That said, he’s been pretty darn good of late in limiting the A’s and Cardinals to a grand total of 2 ER and 10 hits over his last 11.2 innings of work. Colorado has however dropped 10 of his 15 overall appearances and split his six home starts where his 3.00 ERA is a bit unusual. The quality effort he just threw at St. Louis was his first since returning from the DL back on July 3.

Game 2 Probable Pitchers – Wednesday, August 8, 2018, 3:10 p.m. ET ( Local TV )

Chris Archer vs. German Marquez

Archer’s first go round as a member of the Pirates was ugly to say the least. The righty was torched for seven hits and five runs ( 4 ER ) through 4.1 innings in his PNC Park debut against the Cardinals. The effort snapped a string of two straight quality efforts he threw for Tampa bay before being shipped off to the National League. He’s made one career start at Coors Field and impressed in doing so logging six innings of four hit and 2 ER ball, but that occurred back in 2016.

Marquez is no doubt the unheralded arm in Colorado’s starting rotation. The righty stands 9-8 with a 4.70 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 22 starts, but has pitched much better than that of late. Since getting pummeled over the course of June, Senzatela has logged five quality starts through six tries. The lone blowup outing in Arizona really screwed up his peripherals. He enters start No. 23 in fine form, and has dominated Pittsburgh over the course of his career in going 3-0 with a 2.50 ERA, 0.78 WHIP and .105 BAA through three starts.

Washington Nationals at Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Betting Picks

By Mike Rose

The Milwaukee Brewers have to be sick to their stomachs right now. Ten days ago, Craig Counsell’s squad held a decent sized lead over the Cubs for the top spot in the division. After dropping eight of their last 10 ball games, the Brew Crew finds itself 3.5 games back and falling fast. The Washington Nationals simply just haven’t been able to turn on the jets against the MLB odds. They’re running out of time. Maybe Bryce Harper and company are simply just better on paper. Either way, this is as crucial a series as it gets for both clubs with wild card ramifications abundant.

Probable Pitchers: Jeremy Hellickson vs. Junior Guerra

The Nationals went into the All-Star break not feeling the greatest about themselves after dropping two of three at the Pirates and only managing to follow it up with a four game split against the last place Mets. It’s crazy to think just how badly this team has failed to live up to expectations. They were expected to be the runaway winners of the NL East this season. Instead, this veteran club has spun its wheels while younger squads like the Braves and Phillies have had their way with them.

Maybe Dusty Baker wasn’t the problem after all? It’s highly possible someone in the locker room is a cancer. If that’s the case, that due has got to go! There’s simply just way too much talent in D.C. for the Nats to be flirting with a .500 record at this point of the season. Maybe they get back on track here on the road against a scuffling Milwaukee squad considering they’re 26-24 as visitors ( -$217 ).

Brewers’ fans have seen this story play out before. Actually, it’s still fresh in their memory banks after watching their beloved team crack like China dolls the final month of last season. In doing so, the Brewers missed out on postseason play even though they sat atop the NL Central standings a bulk of the season. You’d think they would’ve learned from their mistakes, but right now, that’s simply not the case.

After dropping all five games at PNC Park leading up to the break, Christian Yelich and his mates were just dominated at home by what’s considered to be one of the odds on favorites to win the National League in the Los Angeles Dodgers. Most disparaging was the fact that the series defeat took place in the comforts of their own house where they entered the series 12 games over .500 and up over $1K for baseball bettors. As well as Chicago is playing right now, they better figure it out before their 3.5 game deficit turns into seven!

MLB Betting Trends

The Brewers have held the upper hand in the recent rivalry with Washington by winning six of the last 10 overall meetings. The pitching staffs dominated the proceedings with the under cashing at a 6-3-1 clip. As a host, Milwaukee has also thrived having taken five of the last seven confrontations at Miller Park dating back to 2016. The under is 4-0-1 the last five times these clubs squared off in Milwaukee.

There are some conflicting betting trends to take not of however. Washington has thrived against the NL Central this season in going 8-2, but stands a bankroll killing 4-12 in its last 16 road tilts entering the series. Milwaukee has come out on top seven of the last nine times it hosted a +.500 road team, but again, is dealing with some bothersome injuries and played .200 ball over its last 10 skirmishes.

Nationals at Brewers Picks

This is an extremely tough series to want to get involved with. The Nats are losers in my book and it doesn’t look like their fortunes will be changing any time soon. Milwaukee is snake bitten right now, and only the baseball gods know when they’ll finally snap out of their funk. Making this matchup all the more tougher to wager upon on the baseball betting odds is the fact that Junior Guerra will be returning from the DL to make the start for the home team. Jeremy Hellickson gets the nod for the visitors. He was great in his two starts leading up to the break after tossing 11 innings of 1 ER ball combined, but I’m simply not a believer. While he’s done a nice job for the Nats this season, Guerra brings in the better overall body of work. He’s been his best at home where he’s only conceded 48 hits through 60 innings, and because of it, I’m willing to pay to see him finally lead the Brewers to a must-have feel good triumph.

MLB Betting Picks, Nationals vs. Mets Lines

By Mike Rose

Is there a more disappointing team in the National League than the Washington Nationals? This is a team that was predicted to have a cakewalk journey to the NL East pennant and partake in the playoffs a third straight season. As the regular season nears the All-Star break, that just hasn’t been the case. The team hasn’t been able to get in a groove all season. After dropping the opener in Pittsburgh, Dave Martinez’s squad will look to put their best foot forward in Thursday night’s opener against the New York Mets.

Washington Nationals vs. New York Mets
Date and Time: Thursday, July 12, 2018, 7:10 p.m. ET
Location: Citi Field, Queens, NY
MLB Odds: Check Back Later
Probable Pitchers: Max Scherzer vs. Steven Matz
Nationals vs. Mets TV Coverage: Local TV

After taking three of four at home against the wretched Miami Marlins, MLB bettors figured the Nats would hit the road for the ‘Burgh intending on closing the final week of the first week of the season on a high. Not so fast my friend! As small road chalk, Washington only managed top score three runs even though it outhit the Buccos 10-8 to fall by a 6-3 final count.

The defeat dropped Bryce Harper and his mates to a 23-21 on the road where they’ve lost $65 for the season. They have two games remaining at PNC park to pull even, so it’s possible they invade Queens a .500 road team with Hellickson coming of the DL Tuesday and Gio Gonzalez throwing in Thursday’s finale. The Nats have won seven of their last 10 visits to Citi Field.

The New York Mets are nothing more than a dark comedy these days. A complete overhaul of the coaching staff has done nothing to change the direction of this defunct franchise. The injury bug has remained camped outside the ball park with a number of major contributors unable to make an impact this season.

Included in the list of the walking wounded are Noah Syndergaard – big surprise – Yoenis Cespedes – shocking – Todd Frazier, Jay Bruce, Juan Lagares and Travis d’Arnaud. This has forced Mickey Callaway to put together a skeleton crew lineup each and every day the team takes to the playing field. In doing so, the Mets offense unsurprisingly ranks amongst the worst in the league in a number of pertinent statistical categories. After splitting a doubleheader with the Phillies on Monday, New York sits 13 games under .500 as a host ( -$1612 ).

Key Player

Max Scherzer – Mas Max leads the Nats’ pitching staff in ERA ( 2.33 ), wins ( 11 ) and WHIP ( 0.89 ). You’d think Washington would be golden every time he takes to the starting bump, but that hasn’t been the case. Especially recently with the Nationals only coming out on top in two of his last six starts. With nearly 85 percent of his starts being of quality, he’s going to be installed a heavy chalk to lead the visitors to a road win in this spot. Though he hasn’t thrown at the Mets this season, he went 3-1 with a 3.21 ERA and .210 BAA over four starts last season. Lifetime at Citi Field, the righty stands 6-2 with a 1.76 ERA and miniscule 0.78 WHIP. He’s going to have some fun in this one!

Nationals vs. Mets Picks

At one point in time, Steven Matz was considered to be an up and coming future star of the league. That was before he was forced to go under the knife. Since then, the lefty just hasn’t been able to return to his dominant self. While he enters start No. 18 4-6 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.23 WHIP, he’s only registered 81 Ks through his near 90 innings of work. He’s been at his worst at home where his ERA jumps up to 4.17, and served up 11 of his 13 home runs in that ball park. That said, Washington checks in just 9-18 versus southpaws of whom they’ve averaged less than 4.0 runs per game against. Matz has logged nine innings against the Nats this season and only surrendered 3 ER in a pair of no decisions. New York just might be worth taking a stab on the MLB betting odds at a big dog price, but I’ll got the safer route and look for Scherzer and Matz to shine in a pitcher’s duel.

Astros at Indians Picks

By Mike Rose

A possible ALCS showdown is set to go down on FOX Saturday night when the American League behemoth Houston Astros and Cleveland Indians lock horns in the third game of their extended weekend series. A doozy of a pitching rematch is set to go down with Lance McCullers Jr. set to square off against Carlos Carrasco. The righties went at one another last Sunday night in a game the Astros pulled out by a 3-1 final count. Runs could be tough to come by in this one as well.

Houston Astros at Cleveland Indians

Probable Pitchers: Lance McCullers Jr. vs. Carlos Carrasco
Astros at Indians TV Coverage: FOX

The Astros are one of four teams in all of baseball to have amassed 30+ wins at this point of the season. A.J. Hinch and his staff have done a tremendous job keeping their club level headed so as to not suffer a World Series hangover like many other clubs did before them. Especially with the pennant the first in franchise history.

Houston entered Thursday’s series opener winners of five straight series since dropping two of three to the them smoking hot Arizona Diamondbacks at the beginning of May. The club has gotten to this point by way of owning the best pitching staff in the game that’s backed by an offense that ranks top 10 in runs scored per game ( 4.7 ), batting average ( .256 ) and OPS ( .740 ). Even with the team favored heavily in just about every game, it’s still managed to produce $91 in baseball betting profit!

This season has been a struggle for the Tribe. Terry Francona’s squad did however just secure its first series win in three tries by going into Wrigley Field and taking two straight from the feast or famine Cubs. Maybe the feel good wins will propel this team into playing like the team many envisioned at the outset of the season. Regardless, Cleveland only sits a single game over .500 for the season which has seen them cost baseball bettors nearly $1K of their bankrolls.

The issue has been an offense that doesn’t hit for average ( .247 ) and a defense that’s committed a whopping 29 errors ( No. 18 ). On top of that, the bullpen has been a disgrace with it collectively pitching to an ugly 5.65 ERA. However, Andrew Miller looks to be healthy now and he just came up with his biggest hold to date keeping Chicago scoreless in the 8th inning even though they had runners on first and third with no outs. Him pulling through there could get their beleaguered unit back on track.

Pitching Matchup

Lance McCullers Jr. –McCullers was lights out against the Tribe last time out in Houston. He limited Edwin Encarnacion and company to just one hit and no earned runs through seven innings to log his team-leading sixth win of the season. He also registered 8 Ks! Though Houston has won four of his six road starts, his ERA jumps up to 4.36 as opposed to a nifty 1.73 when at home. He’s 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and .045 BAA lifetime against Cleveland, but got lit up in his only career start at Progressive Field.

Carlos Carrasco –Carrasco was the tough-luck loser in last Sunday night’s matchup with the Astros. Cleveland’s No. 2 arm tossed 7.2 innings of 3 ER ball to log a third straight quality start. He also tallied 6 Ks and enters start No. 11 with a 63:14 K/BB ratio. Cleveland has split his four home starts where he’s thrown to an unsightly 5.01 ERA and .250 BAA. That said, he’s 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and .285 BAA in six career starts against the Astros.

You can have your NBA and NHL Playoffs. I simply can’t wait to take this installment of ESPN Sunday Night Baseball in after getting a taste of this exact pitching matchup only a short week ago. We were all over the home team last Sunday, and that will once again be the case in this revenge bout. Carrasco’s home/away splits are a bit disturbing, but so too are McCullers. I honestly foresee the Tribe blowing him up this time around, and because of it, I’ll be laying the price with Cleveland the baseball betting lines at the top-5 online sportsbooks on both the moneyline and run-line. Look for Carrasco to go deep and get plenty of run support to allow Miller and Cody Reed to seal the deal.

MLB Predictions, Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels Picks

Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels Series Betting Preview

By Kyle Markus

Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels Betting

The Los Angeles Angels are coming off a sweeping of the Phillies earlier this week and will look to keep it rolling in a matchup with the Oakland Athletics. This is another series the Angels should win and they’ll need to take advantage of the week’s easy schedule. The Angels are currently in third place in the AL West, but sit just one game back from the Mariners.

The Oakland A’s are six games and two spots behind the Angels in the division and face a very different reality this year. The A’s traded star pitcher Sonny Gray to the Yankees this week, finishing off their multiple weeks of selling before the deadline.

This one should mean much more for the Angels and it’s good opportunity for Los Angeles to make up some ground in the wild card race.

Oakland Athletics vs. Los Angeles Angels

Dates: Friday, August 4, 2017 – Sunday, August 6, 2017

Location: Angel Stadium, Anaheim, CA

The Angels are 9-8 since the All-Star break and will look to push beyond the .500 mark they’ve been hovering around all season in this series.  The team made one move this week before the deadline, trading reliever David Hernandez to the Diamondbacks for a young prospect on the mound. The playoffs might be a longshot but they are still in sight for Los Angeles and while this week’s victories over the Phillies were expected, the sweep and the dominating way that they won were a welcomed result.

The A’ split a four-game series with the Giants this week. The team fell 11-2 in Thursday’s contest and come into Friday’s game with a record of 48-61. Since the break, the A’s are 9-11.

This is the fourth series between the two squads this season. The Angels lead the A’s 6-4 so far in head-to-head matchups.

Game 1 Probable Pitchers – Friday, August 3, 2017, 10:07 p.m. ET (Local TV)

Troy Scribner (Angels) vs. Jharel Cotton (Athletics)

In Scribner’s major league debut against the Blue Jays on July 29th, the 26-year-old rebounded from a rocky start to get the win and retire the last seven batters he faced. He’ll look for that kind of performance this time again, sans the rocky start perhaps. Scribner was called up from Triple-A last week and was elevated to a starting role after Jesse Chavez was sent to the bullpen.

After showing promise during a brief callup last year, Cotton’s first full rookie season isn’t exactly going as planned. He struggled on the mound early then missed most of July due to blisters on his hands. He returned to the rotation last Sunday and allowed five runs on five hits with five walks in the A’s win over the Twins. He has talent but has yet to put it together.

Game 2 Probable Pitchers – Saturday, August 4, 2017, 9:07 p.m. ET (Local TV)

Tyler Skaggs (Angels) vs. Paul Blackburn (Athletics)

Skaggs will return to the mound Saturday against the A’s after missing three months with a strained oblique. The left-hander only had five starts before the injury sidelined him this season. He has an ERA of 3.99 right now but also has the potential to make the Angels rotation much stronger if he can get back to top form.

Since making his major league debut with the A’s in early July, Blackburn has been decent but has struggled a bit with consistency. In six starts he is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. In his most recent start against the Giants on Monday, the 26-year-old allowed five runs on eight hits with one walk in 6.1 innings pitched.

Game 3 Probable Pitchers – Sunday, August 6, 2017, 3:37 p.m. ET (Local TV)

Ricky Nolasco (Angels) vs. Sean Manaea (Athletics)

The Angels need Nolasco to pitch well if they are going to make a push in the wild card race. Despite his 5-12 record, the 34-year-old has had bright moments. The team just needs them to be more frequent from here on out. Nolasco has an ERA of 4.90 currently and has recorded 101 strikeouts this season.

Manaea will be eager to move on from his last performance. He allowed six runs on nine hits in just three innings against the Giants on Tuesday. The 25-year-old has still has an ERA of 3.88 on the season, but it’s been a tough stretch for him. He’s allowed 13 runs on 26 hits, including four home runs, in his last three outings. He will certainly be looking to turn things around on Sunday.
