2017 Belmont Stakes Odds To Win

The 2017 edition of the Belmont Stakes is officially one of the stranger ones we’ve seen in recent years, and the colts aren’t even saddled up yet. It’s always a downer to not have a Triple Crown contender going into the Belmont, but at least we often see colts who contended in the first two legs of the Triple Crown going at it in the third. This year, the Kentucky Derby winner, Always Dreaming was disappointing and was never a factor at the Preakness Stakes, while the Preakness winner, Cloud Computing, was never serious considered to run at Belmont Park.

Matters were surprisingly made worse on Wednesday when Classic Empire, the second favorite at the Preakess and third choice at the Derby, was scratched from the Belmont with a foot abcess.

That leaves just one horse in the field who is going to run in all three legs of the Triple Crown. Lookin At Lee finished second at the Derby and fourth at the Preakness, yet he isn’t even the favorite to win the Belmont Stakes at a price of 5 to 1. Instead, that title goes to Irish War Cry, a 7/2 choice who will break out of the No. 7 post. Irish War Cry was bet down to the second favorite at the Kentucky Derby before ultimately having a very disappointing run. Now, he’s refreshed and figures to be more of a factor as a stalker or a closer.

All eyes though, are going to be on Epicharis out of the No. 11 gate. He’s a starter by nature, and he’ll want to be in the lead for much of this race. If he doesn’t have the ability to do that, that might make things awfully interesting. He’s got the look and the feel of the most talented pony in this field.

But the final cherry on top to the strange nature of this race is that most of the horses haven’t even won a race since April. Hollywood Handsome was an allowance winner in his last run in May, but he’s the longest shot on the board at 30 to 1. The only other winner in recent history? Twisted Tom, who has won three races in a row but is now 20 to 1 to capture the third leg of the Triple Crown.
