VCU ( 14-3, 5-5 ATS ) made the CBB lines jump to the Atlantic 10 from the CAA this year, and Shaka Smart’s club has not missed a beat as it looks for its 12th straight win when it hosts Saint Joseph’s ( 9-5, 5-6 ATS ) on Thursday, January 17th from Verizon Wireless Arena in Richmond, VA at 9:00 ET on CBS College Sports.

The Rams began this season 3-3, but all three defeats were “good” losses to teams currently ranked in the Pomeroy Top 30 as they lost by two points to 28th ranked Wichita State, by three points to 25th ranked Missouri and by nine points to third
ranked Duke. VCU has been on a mission since as nine wins during the current 11-game winning streak have been by double-digits.
Saint Joseph’s did give the other new entrant in the Atlantic 10 this year, a scorching hot Butler team, a run for its money before losing 72-66 in the Hawks’ conference opener two games ago, but that was at home. They followed up last game with a 74-66 road win at 212th ranked Duquesne, but this is a much stiffer road test.
VCU is ranked 22nd in the national polls this week, but the Rams have been more highly rated on Pomeroy all season, where they are currently ranked a sparkling 11th on the CBB lines overall. The Rams have been known for their defense for several years now, and they are taking things to new heights this year by ranking sixth in the country in defensive efficiency.
VCU has always liked to apply pressure, and no team in the country is doing it better this year as the Rams lead the nation in defensive turnover percentage by turning teams over 30.7 percent of the time, a full 10 percent higher than the national average of 20.6 percent. What has made VCU a more balanced and dangerous club this season though has been the improvement of the offense.
The Rams ranked only 97th in offensive efficiency and 229th in effective field goal percentage last year, but they are the way up to 30th and 49th respectively in those two categories this season, as they are hitting on 51.1 percent of their two-point shots and 36.0 percent of there three-pointers. With their stiff defense, that offense
has been plenty good enough to produce an average winning margin of 18.1 points per game.
Now the Hawks enter this contest with four CBB lines wins in the last five games with Butler being the only blemish, but then again, Butler was their only challenge as the highest ranked victim among the four wins was 102nd ranked Iona.
Saint Joseph’s does have two wins over Pomeroy Top 100 teams, with one being vs. 31st ranked Notre Dame on a neutral court in Brooklyn and the other coming vs. 84th ranked Harvard at home. VCU is ranked considerably higher and the Hawks have yet to face anything close to this caliber on the road.
Free Pick – This one has the makings of a CBB lines blowout as VCU should make it an even dozen in a row with ease.
