MLB Betting – Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay Rays Open 2nd Half with Battle against the Minnesota Twins
Written by Steven Wisner of North Shore Sports, INC
BookMaker Sportsbook has you covered with a detailed breakdown of the MLB betting action as the Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays kick off the second half with the first of three at Target Field.
The Tampa Bay Rays will look to get the second half started right as they take on the Minnesota Twins.
The Rays will send right-handed hurler Alex Cobb to the hill in this MLB betting match-up. The 26 year old missed a month of the season and has been up-and-down since his return. Overall, the youngster has a 4-6 record with a 4.14 ERA and 1.250 WHIP in 76 innings. Most recently, he is coming off a 6 2/3 inning outing against the Royals where he allowed just two runs and struck out seven.
Cobb will look for some run support from his teammates, but the Rays have struggled offensively, scoring just 377 runs in their 97 games. Tampa Bay will look to star third baseman Evan Longoria ( .719 OPS ) to get back into form in the second half and will continue to lean on the likes of Kevin Kiermaier ( .925 OPS ) while Wil Myers remains on the disabled list.
Facing this lackluster Rays’ offense will be Twins hurler Kyle Gibson. Like Cobb, Gibson is a 26 year old right-hander and has put up similar numbers with a 3.92 ERA and 1.257 WHIP.
The Twins offense, however, has been better in the first half than the Rays, scoring 402 runs in just 92 games.
The team is led by a pair of All-Stars in second baseman Brian Dozier ( .777 OPS ) and catcher Kurt Suzuki ( .760 OPS ). Since returning from the disabled list, Josh Willingham has also provided some quality at bats with a .772 OPS despite a low .212 average.
Much like the Rays, who are without Myers and David DeJesus, the Twins are also dealing with injury concerns in their line-up. The most notable is Joe Mauer who, despite a slow start to the season, remains the most recognizable face, and likely dangerous bat, in the order.
Though the starters are basically a push in this tilt against the baseball betting odds, the Twins have the clear advantage offensively. They also hold the edge in the bullpen as the Twins bullpen ERA is a solid 3.21 compared to the Ray’s 3.88.
MLB Prediction – These teams have met once this season with the Twins taking two in the three game series. The Twins’ starter, Gibson, however, has the Twins’ only loss to the Rays in 2014. Still, I give the edge to the Twins in this MLB betting match-up. After all, Minnesota is 5-1 in their last six games and undefeated in their last four home games against a team with a losing road record. Further, Cobb has struggled with consistency on the year and is 0-4 in his last four starts following a quality start. The Twins also possess the offensive and bullpen advantage over the Rays.

MLB Betting – Looking to Reverse Their Skid, the Toronto Blue Jays Take on the Los Angeles Angels
Written by Steven Wisner of North Shore Sports, INC
The Toronto Blue Jays will travel to Anaheim to take on the Los Angeles Angels in the middle game of a three game set on Tuesday and BookMaker Sportsbook has the MLB betting showdown covered with all you need to know about the trends, injuries and key players.
The Toronto Blue Jays have been struggling of late, losing seven of their last nine MLB betting match-ups to surrender the top spot in the American League East.
The Jays will look to reverse that trend and get back in the win column against the Los Angeles Angels, and will send veteran knuckleballer R.A. Dickey to the mound. The 39 year old right-hander is having a very up and down season. Overall, he has a 6-8 record with a 4.10 ERA and 1.357 WHIP in 112 innings.
Meanwhile, the Angels will send 22-year old left-hander Tyler Skaggs to the hill. Skaggs has spent some time on the disabled list, but has been pretty solid with a 4-4 record and 4.16 ERA to go along with a 1.198 WHIP.
Both Dickey and Skaggs, while completely different pitchers, will each have difficult challenges on Tuesday as the Angels and Jays rank third and fourth, respectively, in the Major Leagues in runs scored.
Dickey’s challenge, however, figures to be harder as the Angels have outscored Toronto by 25 runs in three fewer games. They also have a relatively healthy line-up as David Freese is dealing with a shin injury, but nobody from the line-up is on the disabled list.
The line-up is built around an unbeatable middle of the order in Mike Trout ( 1.005 OPS and 20 HR ), Albert Pujols ( .808 OPS and 19 HR ) and Josh Hamilton ( .832 OPS ). While those three have dominated in MLB betting contests, the Angels supplement that with a .361 OBP atop the order from Kole Calhoun and above average production from the likes of Howie Kendrick at second ( 109 OPS+ ) and Erick Aybar at shortstop ( 106 OPS+ ). In fact, Freese is the only starter hitting below a .729 OPS.
For the Jays, the offense is all about right-fielder Jose Bautista ( .941 OPS ) and first baseman Edwin Encarnacion ( .959 OPS and 26 HR ). Unfortunately for Toronto, however, Encarnacion is suffering from a grade two quad sprain. That is a huge blow for this offense, particularly with Brett Lawrie also injured. Nevertheless, the Jays still have the firepower to produce with Bautista along with Adam Lind ( .897 OPS ), Melky Cabrera ( .806 OPS ), Juan Francisco ( .809 OPS ) and Jose Reyes ( .709 OPS and 17 SB ). Even so, they will need Dickey to hold down the Angels if they want to beat the MLB betting odds in this one.
In addition, they will also need production from their bullpen. Despite an inflated 4.36 ERA, the Jays have some quality arms, headlined by closer Casey Janssen ( 1.35 ERA ). The Angels, on the other hand, have jettisoned their closer, Ernesto Frieri, to Pittsburgh for Jason Grilli. The rest of the Angels bullpen, however, has produced including Joe Smith ( 2.63 ERA ), Kevin Jepsen ( 2.31 ERA ), Mike Morin ( 2.01 ERA ) and Fernando Salas ( 2.86 ERA ).
MLB Prediction – Dickey and Skaggs have produced similar numbers on the season, but the Angels have the clear advantage in the bullpen and on offense now that Encarnacion is injured. In addition, the trends favor the Angels in this MLB betting match-up as well. After all, the Angels are 6-1 in their last seven against the Jays and 5-1 in their last six in Los Angeles. In addition, the Angels are an impressive 11-1 in their last 12 home games against a right-handed starter and 20-8 in their last 28 overall. Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are just 0-6 in their last six road games and winless in Dickey’s last four starts.

Baseball Betting Lines – Chicago White Sox Could Surprise Baltimore Tuesday

The Orioles return home from a 6-game AL East road trip in which they went 4-2 against the baseball betting lines to move within 1.5-games of division-leading Toronto. They have a shot to make up more ground as Baltimore plays 11-straight games at home starting Monday vs. Chicago. The Orioles play the White Sox for the first time this season and Chicago enters the series opener with four-straight losses; all on the road. The White Sox are in last place in the AL Central but send under-rated Jose Quintana ( 3-7, 3.87 ERA ) to the mound Tuesday.
Quintana tossed his best game in June last time out limiting the Twins to 2 runs on 6 hits in 7.0 innings and picked up a no-decision in a 4-2 loss. The lefty has allowed just 5 HRs in 90 innings and 1 HR since April. His xERA of 3.36 and solid ground ball/fly ball profile of 49%/21% suggest more improvement ahead with a falling ERA.
The White Sox have only scored 2 runs in each of Quintana’s last four starts. I’m not convinced that scoring will be limited Tuesday despite Oriole Park at Camden Yards yielding the fewest runs per game and HRs in the AL this season. The Orioles send Miguel Gonzalez ( 4-4, 4.41 ERA ) to the mound and Baltimore is 4-1 in his last five starts and 17-4 in his last 21 home starts.
But the right-hander was rusty in his last start June 17 following a stint on the 15 day DL with an oblique injury. He allowed 4 runs on 8 hits including 2 HRs in 5.0 innings but managed to pick up the win in a 7-5 Orioles road win at Tampa Bay. Gonzalez is a risk to bet as favorites on the MLB betting lines and while the White Sox are struggling, we anticipate Quintana keeping them in this game with a shot to win as a mid-sized underdog.
Baseball Prediction: The under is 7-0 in the Orioles last seven home games and 5-0 in the last five meetings between these two teams in Baltimore. The White Sox are 0-4 in Quintana’s last four road starts and 3-14 in his last 17 road starts vs. a team with a winning record. Despite the negative trends and profiles, the White Sox will be the value side on the baseball betting lines and we’ll take a shot with Chicago to snap out of their losing funk.
