In one of the better non-conference matchups against the CBB odds this early season, Purdue (7-1, 3-2 ATS), fresh off of its win over Miami in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, pays a visit to undefeated Xavier (5-0, 2-1 ATS) from the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, OH on Saturday, December 3rd at 3:00 ET on ESPNU.
We have all the respect in the world for Xavier as we rate the Musketeers right there with Memphis among the top mid-major teams in the country, but we feel compelled to take what we feel is a better Purdue team as a probable underdog on the CBB odds in this spot, especially since the biggest strength of the Purdue team matches up very well with one of Xavier’s very few weaknesses.
Purdue is currently ranked 12th in the early Pomeroy Ratings, and the only blemish on the Boilermakers’ record so far came vs. an underrated Alabama team that is now rated 11th by Pomeroy on a neutral court. Granted, this is Purdue’s first true road game of the year, but this is a team with good veteran leadership in Lewis Jackson and Robbie Hummel, so that should not affect them as much as some other teams.
As you might expect, having a sharp-shooter like Hummel back after he missed last season with a torn ACL has improved the Purdue offense on the CBB odds, as they now rank 19th in the country in offensive efficiency and 50th in effective field goal percentage. Hummel’s shooting has only been half of the story though, as the point guard Jackson has been almost flawless in directing Head coach Matt Painter’s offense.
Just how flawless, you may ask? Well, consider that Purdue leads the entire country in turnover percentage, turning the ball over on just 13.3 percent of its possessions. A team that protects the ball that well is going to win a lot of basketball games, and the senior Jackson has the experience to make sure that this hot start is not a fluke.
Now, Xavier remained unbeaten with a nice CBB wagering odds road win at Vanderbilt on Monday but remember that the Commodores’ center Festus Ezeli is still out and the Musketeers were able to take advantage of what is currently a weak Vanderbilt interior defense.
Still, when all is said and done, Xavier is a very sound team on both sides of the ball, ranking 30th in the country in offensive efficiency and 23rd in defensive efficiency. However, one thing that the Musketeers do not do is force turnovers, ranking a measly 189th in the country by forcing turnovers on only 21.2 percent of opponents’ possessions.
CBB Odds Selection: When you combine that with the fact that Purdue simply does not turn the ball over, it means that the Boilermakers can run basically whatever they want out of their offensive sets with just token pressure, which could be the deciding factor here. Because of that freedom, back the Boilermakers on Saturday!
Do you expect Purdue to prove its superiority here with a nice road cover in hostile territory, or will Xavier remain undefeated with a big home win? Whatever your opinion, for the highest betting limits, wager on all CBB odds at Bookmaker.
