Mississippi State (19-5, 11-12 ATS) may be nationally ranked on the CBB lines at 18th in the human polls, but the Bulldogs look like one of the more overrated ranked teams and we like home standing LSU (13-10, 12-8 ATS) to get the best of them at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge, LA on Tuesday, February 14th at 9:00 ET on ESPNU.
The Pomeroy Ratings are not as flattering to Mississippi State as the national pollsters are, and the Bulldogs have been very fortunate on the CBB lines as seven of their last nine wins have been by five points or less. Also keep in mind that MSU has played only five true road games all season, going 2-3 both straight up and against the spread with one of the wins coming on overtime.
LSU is much improved after a couple of dismal seasons, and while they may not yet be good enough to compete with the upper echelon teams of the SEC, we do not put Mississippi State in that category despite its record and ranking, so we are looking for the young Tigers to win this contest straight up.
The Bulldogs are ranked only 64th overall by Pomeroy, and while the offense has been good on the CBB lines, the defense has been quite lax and the major luck factor that they have had on their side has to run out sooner or later. Mississippi State ranks 28th in offensive efficiency and 48th on effective field goal percentage, but it is ranked only 142nd in defensive efficiency and 154th in eFG% against.
As if those defensive numbers were not alarming enough, the Bulldogs do not force many turnovers either, ranking 332nd out of 345 Division I teams in that department at 16.6 percent; considerably less than the national average of 20.6 percent.
The Bulldogs still have games vs. Kentucky and Alabama coming up, but we don’t think it will take that long for them to get exposed as frauds as we look for that to happen right here!
Now by no means are we saying that LSU is a powerhouse on the CBB betting lines, but their 89th overall ranking is close enough to Mississippi State here that being home can put them over the top, and this is definitely a program going in the right direction after finishing 227th on the Pomeroy Ratings with an 11-21 record a year ago.
This is a very young team whose two biggest contributors are both freshmen, but that did not stop the Tigers from handing a Marquette team currently ranked 22nd by Pomeroy its first loss of the year. The Tigers are now seeking their first signature win in SEC play and most would see this as it simply because of Mississippi State’s ranking alone.
Personally, we do not think this would be much of an upset, so look for LSU to make its statement at home.
