The Chiefs (6-8, 8-6 ATS) did the unthinkable last week by handing the Green Bay Packers their first loss as double-digit NFL betting underdogs, but we feel that will work against the Chiefs this week when they host the Raiders (7-7, 8-5-1 ATS) at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO on Saturday, December 24th in a game televised regionally on CBS at 1:00 ET.

Yes, Kansas City is still mathematically alive to win the division, but too much needs to happen for it to be a realistic chance and the Chiefs basically admitted as much when firing Coach Todd Haley two weeks ago. Therefore, their game vs. the Packers last week was their Super Bowl, and they shocked the world with a 19-14 upset win. We can’t imagine that same intensity this week.

The Raiders have a more realistic chance of winning the AFC West, but that scenario starts with them winning their last two games, so they should be the more determined team come Saturday afternoon

The Raiders also have revenge on their minds after the Chiefs went into Oakland earlier this season and shut them out 28-0 as 3½-point underdogs on the NFL betting odds. Keep in mind that Kyle Boller started that game for Oakland though, and that Carson Palmer was obviously rusty when he made his Raiders’ debut in the second half.

Now, Palmer may not have turned out to be the savior that Oakland fans expected him to be when he was first acquired, but to his credit he has gotten better every week and he may have had his best game as a Raider in a narrow 28-27 defeat to the Detroit Lions last week, as he completed a remarkable 32-of-40 passes (80% completion percentage) for 367 yards with a touchdown pass and no interceptions.

What made the Chiefs’ upset of the Packers even more remarkable is the fact that Kansas City has key injuries in the secondary and had not displayed much of a pass rush all year. Yet, they held Aaron Rodgers to just 17-of-35 passing for 235 yards and sacked him four times. We will chalk that game up as an anomaly for a team playing with great emotion, so we think Palmer will be successful this week.

The Kansas City offense did not really show much improvement in NFL betting in Kyle Orton’s first game as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, as it did not produce a touchdown until there was less than five minutes left in the game. Remember too that in the 28-0 upset in Oakland, the Chiefs scored two touchdowns on interception returns as the offense mustered just 300 total yards.

In fact, Kansas City ranks only 27th in the NFL in total offense at 304.1 yards per game, so look for Oakland to avenge that loss and keep its playoff hopes alive.
