The New England Patriots (7-3, 6-4 ATS) have looked like their old selves in nationally televised prime time games the last two weeks, and we look for their NFL betting run to continue when they visit the Philadelphia Eagles (4-6, 4-6 ATS) on Sunday, September 27th, 2011 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA at 4:15 ET on CBS.

Now the Eagles did keep their miniscule playoff hopes alive with a big road win vs. the division rival New York Giants on the NFL betting lines last Sunday night with Vince Young subbing for Michael Vick at quarterback, but regardless who is under center for Philadelphia, they will quickly discover that beating a motivated New England team in top form is a daunting task.

Rumors of the Patriots’ demise after back-to-back losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants were obviously greatly exaggerated, as they followed up those losses with what will probably be looked back upon as their biggest win of the season when they went on the road to the Meadowlands and crushed the Jets 37-16 to put themselves in the driver’s seat for another AFC East title.

New England then toyed with the Kansas City Chiefs in what looked like a dead scheduling spot 34-3 Monday night in a game where they actually looked quite ordinary and yet the outcome was never really in doubt; even as a 17-point NFL betting odds favorite.

Granted, the Philadelphia defense looked better against the Giants and it has actually played well at times in recent weeks, but that unit has been spotty for the most part over the course of the season and it has yet to face an offense as great as this New England unit.

The Patriots even rushed for 157 yards vs. Kansas City, and if they run effectively again vs. an Eagles’ run defense allowing 4.5 yards per carry, it would make Tom Brady even more unstoppable than usual.

Oddly, the Eagles are only 1-4 both straight up and against the NFL betting lines here at home this season, with the lone win being a blowout of the Dallas Cowboys. This seems like a team that gets up for its divisions rivals, as in the last five games, Philadelphia has beaten all three of the other teams in the NFC East, but lost its two non-divisional games including a bad home loss to the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago.

Now the Patriots have looked vulnerable defensively at times this year, and they do rank dead last in the NFL in total defense surrendering 404.2 yards per game. However their improvement the last few weeks has coincided with the return of Jerod Mayo to the lineup, and he was all over the field on Monday with seven tackles and four assists.
