The NFC West champion San Francisco 49ers (13-3, 12-3-1 ATS) will look to write a successful NFL playoff betting chapter in their seasonal log when they host the New Orleans Saints (14-3, 13-4 ATS) in the divisional round on Saturday, January 14, 2012; kick-off from Candlestick Park is set to go live on FOX at 4:30 ET.

New Orleans Saints (-3.5) -110
San Francisco 49ers (+3.5) -110
Over/Under 47.5

The Saints wiped away the bitter memory of falling to the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card round last season this past weekend by taking it to the Detroit Lions in the second half en route to the 45-28 home win and cover. Even without one of his favorite targets (WR Lance Moore), QB Drew Brees was simply sensational completing 33-of-43 passes for 466 yards and three TDs with no interceptions. New Orleans even got its ground game going with the RB trio of Pierre Thomas, Darren Sproles, and Chris Ivory combining to rush for 164 yards on 31 carries (5.3 YPC) and three touchdowns. When the Saints offense is firing on all cylinders like that, they’re a tough unit to contain. The “Who Dats” hit the road here having tallied 40+ points in each of their last four NFL betting line match-ups.

That said; the Saints must now hit the road and play in an outdoor venue for only the sixth time this season. In its five previous outdoor tussles, New Orleans scored an average of just 25.8 PPG against the Packers, Jaguars, Panthers, Buccaneers, and Titans; it also incurred its only two straight up losses of the season on the road as well. On top of that, the offense has to deal with one of the league’s best defenses that was the best at defending the run (#1 at 77.2 YPG), and only gave up a paltry 14.3 points per game (#2). Brees will look to the air considering San Francisco surrendered 230.9 YPG via the pass (#16), but make no mistake, any points the Saints post in this one will certainly be earned. Coach Payton’s squad has only gone 5-6 ATS the L/11 times it was favored on the road in the 3.5-7 point range.

What a difference a coach makes! San Francisco is comprised basically of the entire roster Mike Singletary got to work with throughout his brief stay by the Bay. The Niners grossly underachieved under his watch compiling 8-8 and 6-10 records the last two seasons. Insert Coach Jim Harbaugh into the mix, and San Francisco put forth its best effort since the Bill Walsh and George Seifert days. It’s been nine long years since this franchise found itself partaking in NFL playoff betting action, so it’s safe to say “The Stick” will be rocking come Saturday afternoon.

Sure, San Francisco took advantage of a 3rd place NFC West schedule, but don’t for one minute dismiss this team as not having any shot in this game. This club is as close to having an old school mentality as it gets. They look to run the ball down your throat and call upon their QB to make plays when needed, and then back it up with a suffocating brand of defense that often times has the opposition begging for mercy in the late stages. Backing both sides of the ball up are exceptional special teams units led by the booming leg of punter Andy Lee and veteran David Akers whose been nothing but consistent throughout his storied kicking career.

NFL Playoff Betting Prediction – We’ve had no problem fading the Saints in outdoor venues this season since we believe the Saints are a completely different animal outside the fast track of a dome. On grass and in the elements is a different story, and one the Saints might not enjoy hearing read out loud. However, the best bet in this match-up looks to be in the ‘total’. San Fran was simply awesome in its own house this season allowing an average of 10.9 PPG, which included giving up a grand total of just 10 points to Arizona, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh their L/3. This is by far the highest posted number of any 49ers game this season, and the ‘under’ is a perfect 4-0 the L/4 times San Francisco was installed a playoff underdog. It’s also a perfect 4-0 the L/4 times the Saints hit the road to take on a +.500 home team and 5-2 in their L/7 games on grass. The Saints stole one by the Bay a year ago on Monday night – don’t expect the Niners to be in a giving mood this time around!
