NFL Betting Online:
The Baltimore Ravens (12-4, 8-7-1 ATS) will look to take advantage of the franchise’s first NFL betting playoff home game of the John Harbaugh era on Sunday, January 15, 2012 when they collide with the Houston Texans (11-6, 12-5 ATS) for the second time this season; kick-off from M&T Bank Stadium is set to go live on CBS starting at 1:00 ET.
NFL Betting Lines
Houston Texans (+7.5) -110
Baltimore Ravens (-7.5) -110
Over/Under 35.5
With the dramatic decline of the Indianapolis Colts due to Peyton Manning’s neck injury this season, the Houston Texans were finally able to make hay in the AFC South en route to winning the division and qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. That however wasn’t enough for Head Coach Gary Kubiak’s outfit who went out last week and took it to a Cincinnati Bengals outfit that backed its way into the second season. The experience and talent discrepancy was highly noticeable, as the Texans gouged the Bengals defense with an Arian Foster rushing barrage (153 yards/2 TDs), and followed it up by playing lock down defense en route to securing the impressive 31-10 home win and NFL betting odds cover.
The team is now faced with the obstacle of going back to Baltimore to take on a Ravens team they already lost to back in Week 6; and that was with a healthy QB Matt Schaub navigating the offense. This time however, youngster T.J. Yates will be asked to solve what has been a nasty Ravens defense that preys upon those not familiar with their schemes. However, the Texans defense closely resembles what Baltimore brings with it to the table, only it’s much younger. That in and of itself is huge, and it also helps him that he’s got the silky-smooth Foster and a healthy WR Andre Johnson to get him out of a number of pickles. The Texans won and covered five of their eight regular season games played away from Reliant Stadium this season.
The road to the Super Bowl for so many years came as a visitor for the Ravens who saw their respective campaigns end at Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, and Pittsburgh the last three seasons. However, Ray Lewis and his mates finally get to take to the field in the second season at home after they went out and won the AFC North by sweeping their two regular season meetings with the hated Steelers. Thankfully that was the case since the Ravens were a completely different animal away from their home fans winning just four of their eight games on the road (4-4 ATS).
As a host, it was a completely different story for the Ravens who went a perfect 8-0 SU & 4-3-1 ATS with wins against playoff entrants Pittsburgh, Houston, Cincinnati, and San Francisco. They won those four games by an average of 15 points per game and went 3-0-1 versus the closing NFL betting lines. Their scoring went up (27.4 PPG) while their points allowed went down (14.9 PPG) as a host, but for them to come out of this one alive, it will be up to QB Joe Flacco to loosen the underbelly of the Texans defense up whose 4th ranked rush defense (96 YPG) should be able to contain RB Ray Rice; he ran for 101 yards at 4.4 YPC but didn’t score a TD in the first go round.
NFL Betting Prediction – Is it possible that Houston is a mirror image of what the Ravens were when they weren’t so long in the tooth? One can certainly argue that. The bottom line here will be ball security, as both of these defenses are amongst the best in the league. Whichever team is able to win the turnover battle will more than likely go on to win the game outright. Houston picked off three Andy Dalton passes last week and checks in with a +10 turnover margin while the Ravens counter with a +2 tally. Houston’s also 8-4 ATS the L/12 times it sought revenge against an opponent, while the Ravens have covered just one of their L/5 divisional playoff games. This one will be nip and tuck the whole way through, and we believe both teams have 50/50 shots of winning the game outright. With that the case, this line is ridiculous so take the points with the visitors and look for them to make the Ravens earn the win if they aren’t able to pull the upset.
