The NFC South reigning New Orleans Saints (13-3, 12-4 ATS) will look to survive Wild Card Weekend and build upon their impressive NFL betting resume at home on Saturday, January 7, 2012 when they welcome the Detroit Lions (10-6, 8-7-1 ATS) into the Bayou for the second time this season; kick-off from the Mercedes Benz Superdome is set to go live on NBC starting at 8:00 ET.

It’s been a long time coming for the City of Detroit who last tasted the thrill of qualifying for the playoffs back in the team’s 1999-2000 campaign. They went 8-8 SU & 7-8-1 ATS that season losing each of their last four games of the regular season before bowing out to the Washington Redskins (27-13) in the wild card round. The franchise endured the head scratching Matt Millen era, had a number of lame duck coaches go by the wayside, and saw a majority of their top draft picks end up being busts. This allowed head coach Jim Schwartz and his staff to completely revamp what the Lions wanted to do as a franchise with it having already struck rock bottom. This year’s squad rattled off wins in three of their final four NFL betting lines skirmishes (2-2 ATS), and looks to certainly be a team on the rise.

That said; Detroit still looks to have plenty of work ahead of it if the team is to be taken seriously by any and all of its top tier opponents. For starters, it must show the ability to at the very least get in the way of what opposing offenses try to do against it. Over the last month, the team surrendered nearly 28 PPG and now it must go into the dome in N’awlens where the Saints simply tore apart each and every one of the team’s it ran up against this season. The Lions also enter this playoff spot one of the most penalized teams in the league averaging eight flags per game, and the yellow hankies thrown against them absolutely killed them in their Week 13 trip to the Superdome.

The NFC South champion Saints look to be all geared up for another successful run in the postseason. Save for a shocking Week 6 loss at Tampa Bay (26-20), New Orleans dominated its division en route to 5-1 SU & 4-2 ATS marks. QB Drew Brees and his offensive mates possess the league’s second ranked scoring attack that averaged 34.2 PPG and racked up an average of 467.1 YPG (#1). The unit was lethal through the air compiling a gaudy 334.2 YPG through the air (#1), but also proved to not be one dimensional with RBs Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, rookie Mark Ingram, and Chris Ivory chewing up an average of 132.9 YPG (#6) while also hitting pay dirt 13 times.

It was a no brainer to back New Orleans in front of the hometown faithful, as the team went on to win and cover the closing NFL betting lines in all eight of their home tussles. Amongst the teams that got destroyed in the Superdome were the Houston Texans, New York Giants, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons; all teams that qualified for the second season.

NFL Betting Prediction – Detroit managed just 2-3 SU & ATS records when dogged this season losing each of the L/3 times against Chicago, Green Bay, and New Orleans. They also went 1-5 SU & ATS versus playoff teams. The squad did show it had the firepower to compete with the Saints in the first go round outgaining them 466-438, but their lack of maturity reared its ugly head with 11 penalties that cost them on a number of big plays. With the Saints 11-1 ATS the L/12 times they went off the board as home chalk, and the Lions just 1-5-1 ATS the L/7 times they were dogged by 10.5+ points, we’ll side with the Saints who will no doubt look to put their best foot forward after getting shocked at Seattle in this spot a year ago.

Will Detroit be able to solve the mystery that has been the Saints at home, or will New Orleans cover its ninth straight against the closing NFL betting line?
