The New York Jets (2-2, 1-3 ATS) enter their Week 5 match-up with the division rival New England Patriots (3-1, 3-1 ATS) on Sunday, October 9th in desperation mode looking to snap a two-game losing streak while the home team seeks revenge; kick-off from Gillette Stadium is scheduled for 4:15 ET on CBS.

Maybe Jets legend Joe Namath was right when he ripped head coach Rex Ryan’s squad a few weeks back, as this team looks to be a shell of its former self on both sides of the ball over the course of the first four weeks of the regular season. To date, NY owns home wins over both Dallas (lucky) and Jacksonville, but has been ripped apart in its first two road games at Oakland and Baltimore. This afternoon’s game will mark the Jets third straight game away from MetLife Stadium; a situation they haven’t faced since the strike-shortened season back in 1982.
New York went on to win 11 of its 16 regular season games and go 9-7 against the closing NFL betting odds a year ago by running the ball down its opponents throats and playing tough-nosed defense. That has hardly been the case this season as the Jets are giving up 24 PPG and sport a 13.0 YPP average defensively, while the ground game has mustered an average of just 71 YPG on 3.1 YPC. On top of it, the O-Line has allowed 11 sacks. The absence of C Nick Mangold has certainly played a role, but when superstars go down, others have to step up and neither LaDainian Tomlinson nor Shonn Greene have done so. Jets opponents have also gouged their defense for 131 YPG on the ground and 4.2 YPC. So, NY can’t run the ball themselves, keep their QB upright or stop the opposition from having success on the ground. That in and of itself is the main reason why the Jets are a .500 football team heading into Week 5.
Then there’s the Patriots who enter this divisional tussle an unbelievable comeback by the Buffalo Bills away from being undefeated. New England just showed the entire NFL betting odds community just how good of a team it really is by going into Oakland on the back-end of its two-game road trip and handing the Raiders a 31-19 defeat as six-point road chalk. The final score was actually closer than how the game really played out as the Pats limited RB Darren McFadden to just 75 yards (41 on a long run), while Tom Brady threw for 226 yards and two TDs.
All the talk heading into the game was about Oakland’ s explosive ground attack, but the Patriots took a page from the Raiders and unleashed the duo of BenJarvus Green-Ellis and rookie Stevan Ridley who went on to gouge the home team’s defense to the tune of 172 yards on 6.6 YPC. So, now the Patriots have a ground attack to go along with the league’s top ranked passing attack that’s averaging 385 YPG and almost a first down per every pass attempt (9.5 TPC). It just doesn’t seem fair!
The Jets went into Foxborough in January and toppled the Patriots 28-21 in the divisional round of the playoffs to effectively end the Pats season short for the second year in a row. The road team is 18-7-1 ATS in these AFC East rivals L/26 overall meetings, but New England smashed the Jets 45-3 as four-point favorites when they hosted the Jets last season.
NFL Odds Prediction – Short and sweet… Revenge might be an overrated reason to back a team in a specific instance, but not here. New York has done nothing but flap its gums about ending the Patriots season a year ago, so you can bet your bottom dollar that Brady and Belichick will have cooked something up to hand Rex’s men a defeat they won’t soon forget. New York is a lost football team right now, while the Patriots are firing on all cylinders. With New England 14-4 ATS its L/18 as home chalk up to 10 points, this one has romp written all over it!
