In a game between one team fighting for a division title and a first round bye and another team fighting to win a playoff spot on the NFL odds, the Ravens (11-4, 7-7-1 ATS) hit the road to take on the Cincinnati Bengals (9-6, 8-5-2 ATS) at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, OH on Sunday, January 1st at 4:15 ET on CBS.

The Ravens would wrap up the AFC North and the first round bye that comes along with it with a victory, and they are even still alive for the top overall seed in the AFC, although that would require an unexpected loss by the New England Patriots at home to Buffalo. Conversely, a loss on the NFL odds here would knock Baltimore down to a wild card and a five-seed with an expected Pittsburgh win vs. Cleveland.

The Bengals merely need to win this game to clinch a wild card spot as the sixth and final seed, but they certainly did not have the look of a playoff team last week. Leading Arizona 23-0 entering the fourth quarter and in all likelihood very aware that the New York Jets were losing big, thus knowing they controlled their own playoff destiny, the Bengals allowed 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

The Ravens gained a push on the NFL odds in the first meeting between these clubs on November 20, winning 31-24 as seven-point favorites, and the Bengals outgained them by 110 yards. That continued Baltimore’s annoying pattern of playing down to the level of its opponents, and that is the main reason why the Ravens have lost three straight games against the spread, not covering in wins vs. the Colts and Browns.

That said, we cannot imagine the Ravens not coming to play this week with so much at stake, and they are simply the much better team here when both teams are playing at full capacity. This is especially true when you consider that the Bengals have not played well vs. winning teams this season.

Cincinnati has taken advantage of a very favorable NFL odds schedule, going a perfect 8-0 straight up vs. teams that are currently under .500. While the Bengals deserve credit for beating the teams that they are supposed to beat, the flip side of that coin is that they stand a woeful 1-6 against teams with winning records.

Furthermore, that one win was vs. an 8-7 Tennessee Titans’ team that we feel is overrated also. That is a major problem vs. a very good Baltimore team, especially with the Ravens having so much at stake.

Finally, the Bengals were very sloppy in the final minutes vs. Arizona last week when they should have easily put the Cardinals away, stopping the clock unnecessarily and committing stupid untimely penalties. This is probably a team that does not deserve a playoff spot, and we are looking for the Ravens to make sure Cincinnati does not clinch a wild card on its own.
