The Ravens (9-3, 7-4-1 ATS) finally followed a big win with a win in NFL betting action last week, but they were hardly impressive in doing so. The winless Colts (0-12, 3-9 ATS) put forth a very game effort in New England, and we like them to cover this enormous number on Sunday, December 11th at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD at 1:00 ET on CBS.

Baltimore’s three losses this season came following their two wins over Pittsburgh and a huge win over Houston, and all three losses came to inferior teams. That set-up seemed in place again on the NFL betting lines last week vs. the Cleveland Browns following a high-profile win over the 49ers in the ‘HarBowl’, and Baltimore was indeed lackluster but this time prevailed 24-10.

The Colts were understandably 20½-point underdogs vs. the Patriots on the road, but quarterback Dan Orlovsky had the game of his life passing for 353 yards in a 31-24 loss. Indianapolis just may be catching another uninspired team in today’s spot!

Current Line at Bookmaker: Baltimore (-16), Total 40½

Covering that game vs. the Browns while not playing at their best should work against the Ravens on the NFL betting odds here, as they will now be able to take another breather this week vs. a dreadful team, knowing that they have a tougher game next Sunday on the road at San Diego vs. a desperate Chargers club that is actually still alive in the weak AFC West after a big win Monday.

A less than focused effort is not what you want when backing a 16-point favorite, and that makes Baltimore a dicey proposition at this bloated spread. Plus, this lack of urgency could allow the Ravens to give Ray Lewis one more week off to allow his toe injury to heel, which would make it possible for Orlovsky to be somewhat successful again, although probably not at last week’s outrageous level.

Even going back to last season, Baltimore’s cover vs. Cleveland still leaves the Ravens at just 2-5 ATS in NFL betting their last seven games vs. teams with losing records, and that annoying habit of playing down to the opposition has prevented the Ravens from breaking through into elite status.

As for the Colts, since every other team in the NFL has at least two wins, it is no longer a given that this team will finish at 0-16, as winning a game would still leave them with the first pick in the draft. Their effort vs. the Patriots made it obvious that they are not tanking, and we look for another spirited effort this week, which is the opposite of what we expect from the Ravens.

Granted, we do not think that Indianapolis will win this game straight up just with an emotional edge alone, as the Colts really are that bad. However, we do think that the difference in the expected energies spent by these teams will allow the Colts to cover another fat point spread.
