The 2011-12 season can’t end soon enough for a Rams outfit that’s severely digressed from the team that posted a 7-9 SU record a year ago and found themselves just one win away from going to the playoffs. Though injuries have played a major role on head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s roster, St. Louis still figured to be a contender in the NFC West at the outset of the season. That has far from been the case as the Rams enter tonight’s Monday Night Football betting matchup with the rival Seahawks losers of three in a row both straight up and against the spread, and have managed just two wins throughout the regular season schedule with only four games remaining. St. Louis has won and covered only one of its six road games played to date after getting blanked in San Francisco last Sunday.
Not much has worked for the Rams on either side of the ball. QB Sam Bradford has battled injuries all season long which has left the most important position on the offensive side of the ball in flux the first 12 weeks of the season. He’s listed as questionable for this week with a nagging ankle injury, and because A.J. Feeley broke his thumb last week, it’s possible that Tom Brandstater could make his first start at the professional level. If that’s the case, he’s going to need RB Steven Jackson to have a monster game against the Seahawks better-than-average run defense (#11 at 103.7 YPG). With Seattle RB Marshawn Lynch rushing for 100+ in four of his last five games, the Rams better bring it on the defensive side of the ball or this could get ugly quick.
While San Francisco has already wrapped up the NFC West and it would take a minor miracle for the Seahawks to once again qualify for the postseason under head coach Pete Carroll’s watch, you have to be impressed with the team’s overall body of work the last four weeks. Though Baltimore has shown it suffers from major letdown’s after big wins this season, Seattle still did what it had to do to pull the Week 10 upset and then followed it up with a trip to St. Louis where they trashed the Rams 24-7 as three-point football betting line underdogs. Unfortunately, the Seahawks fell apart in the second half of their home matchup with the Washington Redskins in Week 12, but they quickly erased that poor effort last Thursday night when they walloped Vince Young and the Philadelphia Eagles.
QB Tarvaris Jackson put forth his best performance of the year last week against the Eagles completing 13 of 16 passes for 190 yards and a score with no interceptions. He however might not be asked to do much in this one considering the Rams enter ranked dead last in the league in defending the run while showing a penchant for defending the pass (#8 at 208.4 YPG). The Seahawks have split their six home games but covered the closing pointspread in four of those contests; the ‘over’ cashed in five of those games.
Football Betting Prediction – Seattle has won each of the last two meetings with the Rams both SU & ATS to improve its overall mark to 9-1 SU & 8-2 ATS in the team’s L/10 overall confrontations. With the Rams just 1-7 ATS their L/8 on the road and possibly having a QB making his first professional start in the league’s loudest venue, many will be quick to jump on the Seahawks bandwagon. However, this is the NFL and strange things happen every week. St. Louis blew its opportunity to qualify for the playoffs when it lost in this venue in Week 17 last season. Look for the Rams coaching staff to remind their players about that and get them fired up to play under the national spotlight where they will keep this one closer than many expect.
