It’s been an incredibly disappointing season for Head Coach Mack Brown and the Longhorns program. From the benching of QB Garret Gilbert to allow a couple of underclassmen run the offense, to the squad’s inability to win games in front of the Austin faithful, the Texas’ 2011-12 season won’t necessarily be looked at as a success even though the program will return to a bowl game after failing to lace up their bowling shoes a short season ago. With two subpar seasons put forth in back-to-back years, you can expect Brown and his staff to be on the hot seat going into next season.
The problem for the Horns in 2011 has been the offenses inability to put points on the board against stiffer competition. The squad was dropped both SU and against the closing college football gambling line at home last week against the Kansas State Wildcats; the 17-13 outright defeat (-7.5) was the third absorbed at home on the year and dropped them to an even 5-5 ATS overall. Texas has only ventured away from Memorial Stadium three times for true road games to date and managed a 2-1 SU & ATS record beating both UCLA (49-20) and Iowa State (37-14) before falling at Missouri (17-5).
Texas A&M had extremely high hopes heading into its 2011 campaign. With 18 starters returning from their 9-4 club that went to the Cotton Bowl last season, the Aggies figured to be in the running to win the regular season Big 12 Championship. After annihilating its first two opponents by a combined 83-21, the Aggies then went on to drop a pair of heartbreakers against both Oklahoma State and Arkansas before going on to win their next three. From there, it dropped three in a row before taking its frustration out on Kansas last week winning 61-7 as 32-point chalk to move to 4-2 SU & 3-3 versus the college football gambling odds as a host.
Unlike tonight’s opponent, the Aggies have had no problem putting points on the board. Senior QB Ryan Tannehill has thrown for nearly 3200 yards and 26 TDs, while RB Cyrus Gray leads the team on the ground rushing for 1045 yards and 12 TDs. A&M checks in ranked sixth in total offense (512.4 YPG) and 10th in scoring offense (40.9 PPG). The problem has been on the other side of the ball where the Aggies have allowed an average of 400.1 YPG (#76) and 28.8 PPG (#78).
College Football Gambling Prediction – The road team has won each of the last two meetings between these bitter rivals with UT scoring the 49-39 win in 2009 and the Aggies securing the 24-17 home win and cover a year ago. The home team is 10-3 ATS the L/13 overall meetings, but the Aggies have been dreadful in the chalk role this season going 3-7 ATS with four outright defeats. Look for the Horns to be sky high for this one after coming up short last season and possibly pull the upset in front of what will no doubt be a raucous 12th Man crowd!
