The Golden Bears were an unknown commodity entering the 2011 season with a number of playmakers on both sides of the ball. Their campaign got off to a roaring start with decisive wins over both Fresno State and Presbyterian with a hard fought OT win at Colorado sandwiched in between. We still didn’t fully get what Cal could bring to the table after it fell at Washington (31-23) even though it outgained the Huskies and won the turnover battle.

We then got a true reading on the Golden Bears over the next two weeks as they were hardly competitive in 43-15 and 30-9 losses to both Oregon and USC respectively. Head Coach Jeff Tedford’s squad finally snapped their three-game losing streak against the closing college football lines when they pounded Utah 34-10 in Week 8; the win was the team’s first conference scalp of the season.

QB Zach Maynard has thrown for 2565 yards and 16 TDs to date entering their regular season finale. Since tossing four INTs in the embarrassing 31-14 loss at UCLA, the junior has only thrown one over a three-game stretch which could mean the youngster is finally grasping the importance of not turning the ball over. He was solid last week at Stanford throwing for 280 yards and a pair of scores, which included another TD strike to his favorite target, WR Keenan Allen, who has 1193 yards receiving and six TDs on the year. The duo could have a field day in this spot against an ASU pass defense that’s surrendered a whopping 274 yards per game (#108).

With USC ineligible to partake in the first ever Pac-12 Championship Game, Head Coach Dennis Erickson’ squad was the sheik pick to win the North Division with 15 starters back from last year’s 6-6 squad. ASU only fell once, a 17-14 loss at Illinois, over the course of its first six games played (2-4 ATS), but conference play hasn’t treated it nicely and it enters the team’s home finale losers of three in a row after shockingly falling to in-state rival Arizona 31-27 as 10.5-point favorites last week.

Making matters worse for ASU, those three defeats all came as college football lines favorites dropping them to a bankroll bursting 3-7-1 against the closing number this season. If that’s not enough from keeping you away from backing them in tonight’s spot, take the fact that they own a 2-4 mark against the closing number in their six home games into consideration before plopping down your hard earned money.

Cal’s won each of the L/3 in these team’s recent rivalry, and has covered the closing number in six of these teams L/8 overall meetings.
