The Big 10 will once again take center stage on Saturday, October 8th in ABC’s college football odds game of the week when the #14 Nebraska Cornhuskers (4-1, 1-4 ATS) welcome the Ohio State Buckeyes (3-2, 2-3 ATS) into Memorial Stadium; kick-off for the Huskers’ homecoming game is set for 8:00 ET.

It’s been a trying season to date for the Buckeyes, and we’re only five games into the schedule. Suspensions, resignations and poor overall play have already cost the Buckeyes two games to date. They make their first ever trip to Lincoln having just had its 16-game home winning streak snapped after Michigan State eeked out a 10-7 road win and outright cover last week. While the defense did a commendable job frustrating Spartans QB Kirk Cousins – picking him off twice, the offense was flat out wretched gaining a grand total of 178 yards with only 35 of them coming on the ground; Sparty does possess a hard-nosed defense though.

Per usual, the stop unit is what has led the Buckeyes to its moderate success in what many foresaw as a lost season for the program after the “Sweater Vest” resigned. The unit checks in ranked 13th overall allowing a total of just 285.2 total yards per game, while allowing opponents to amass a total of just 14.6 points per game. For Ohio State to be competitive in this college football odds match-up under the lights in Lincoln, the defense will once again have to pick up the slack.

Nebraska entered last week’s tilt with the Badgers in Madison a perfect 4-0, but it was a shaky 4-0 at best. Save for a blowout of Chattanooga in Week 1, the Huskers struggled to separate itself from both Fresno State and Washington before going on to secure its first cover of the season versus Wyoming in front door fashion with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Because of that resume, many were quick to back Wiscy as double-digit favorites, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise that Russell Wilson and his mates completely waxed the Huskers in their first ever Big 10 clash.

This will be a solid test for head coach Bo Pelini’s kids who no doubt look to be a lesser team than the one that played in the Big 12 the last couple seasons. The lock down defense is no more as the Blackshirts have been gouged to the tune of 27.2 PPG (#73) and 377 YPG (#64). The offense, led by sophomore QB Taylor Martinez, is still potent on the ground with both he and junior RB Rex Burkhead leading the charge to an average of 249.8 rushing YPG. That said, the passing game is still extinct, so the Huskers will really have to earn this college football betting odds cover by running into the strength of Ohio State’s defense that’s surrendered just 93.6 YPG on the ground to date.

College Football Odds  Prediction – These Saturday night ABC games have far from been competitive this season, but we’re expecting a good showing from both squads in Week 5. Though Ohio State’s offense leaves plenty to be desired, the defense is still the real deal and Nebraska has shown many holes on its defensive side of the ball as well. The Buckeyes are 6-2 ATS the L/8 times they rushed for less than 100 yards their previous game, as well as 10-4 ATS the L/14 times they battled a +.500 opponent. Big Red’s failed to cover each of their L/4 as a home chalk and stands a woeful 1-10-1 ATS the L/11 times they went off the board a favorite of 10.5 points or more. Look for the Buckeyes to keep it close!
