We haven’t accomplished anything yet, really.” Barkley will surely look to throw, but when he does hand off on Saturday, it will most likely be to Dillon Baxter while Mac Tyler serves a one game suspension.

USC was just 8-5 last season, finishing 6-7 against the college football gambling odds, while the ‘over’ played 7-6.

It’s a new era for Golden Gophers football as former Northern Illinois head coach, Jerry Kill, steps in to assume the role in Minneapolis. Kill replaces Tim Brewster, who was fired midseason in 2010, and interim head coach, Jeff Horton. It will be an uphill battle for Minnesota, but the Gophers have faired well in season openers in the past; the Gophers are 89-32-6 all time in season kickoffs, but this season’s test against Matt Barkley and the Trojans may lead to another tally in the loss column.

Just as Kill has praised Barkley in the past, he’s also backed his own quarterback, Marquis Gray, who makes the transition from wide receiver to signal caller. Though Gray, now a junior, has not started at quarterback since his senior year of high school, he’s the only player on Minnesota’s roster that’s ever taken a snap under center. “I think our big key is how we are going to utilize his [Gray's] talents at quarterback,” Kill said. “I think that will be the key of what we have to do to make sure we can keep him healthy but also be able to utilize his talents.” If Gray’s talents are utilized correctly, perhaps the Gophers could make a run at being relevant on the college football scene once again.

Minnesota ended the 2010 season with a 3-9 record, playing to an even 6-6 mark against the college football gambling lines; the ‘over’ finished 7-4-1.
