From an overall standpoint, the Panthers have been a disappointment managing just one win in five tries. However, from a pointspread perspective, head coach Ron Rivera’s squad has been nothing short of an ATM in covering four of their five overall games played. Rookie QB Cam Newton has had an enormous impact on the team’s offense, as the Panthers have gouged opponents for an average of 428.2 YPG ( #5) and an average of 23.2 PPG ( #15). Keep in mind, last year’s offense ended up ranked dead last scoring an average of 12.3 PPG.

Carolina enters this divisional Week 6 NFL gambling battle off yet another close defeat against the New Orleans Saints. RB DeAngelo Williams had a big afternoon going off for 115 yards and a score on nine carries, but the Panthers defense, which has allowed an average of 26.4 PPG ( #26), was torn apart to the tune of 404 overall yards and didn’t have enough in the tank to hold onto the four-point lead it held with under a minute left. Each of the Panthers four losses have come by seven points or less.

Atlanta found itself in a huge revenge spot last week at home on Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers; the same team that bounced them from the postseason in embarrassing fashion last season. Coach Mike Smith’s troops looked to have brought their “A” game with them to the Dome by bolting out to a quick 14-0 lead. But unfortunately for Falcons backers, RB Michael Turner’s one-yard TD plunge a couple minutes into the second quarter would be the last time Atlanta would put points on the board. When it was all said and done, what looks to be the leagues best overall team outscored them 25-0 the rest of the way to secure the 11-point road win and NFL gambling lines cover.

The Falcons hardly look to be the same team that went on to win 13 regular season games just a short season ago. The two biggest culprits in the falloff has been the team’s inability to run the ball offensively ( #23 at 98.8 YPG) as well as stop opposing passing attacks from gouging them through the air ( #28 at 294.2 YPG). Fortunately, the offense is set to go up against a Panthers defense that’s allowed opponents to rush for an average of 135 YPG ( #27). On the flipside, the defense will be forced to contend with the league’s 5th most potent passing attack ( 311.6 YPG).

NFL Gambling Prediction – The final outcome of this game all depends on what type of mind frame the Falcons will have after coming up short in last week’s revenge bout. If they come in upbeat and motivated to tally a divisional win, RB Michael Turner should have no problem leading Atlanta to victory on the ground. If they enter feeling sorry for themselves, Carolina will take them to the woodshed. We expect the former to occur. Carolina’s lone ATS defeat came on the road in Week 1 at Arizona, and it would have come up short in Chicago had the Bears not gone into a prevent on their final drive. Atlanta’s 5-0 SU & 4-1 ATS as a home chalk in the 3.5-7 point range the L/3 seasons, and with the buy down of the opener, this looks to be a cheap price to back a pissed off Atlanta outfit in its own house.
