No one expected the self-proclaimed “Dream Team” Philadelphia Eagles to be 1-4 at this point and needing a NFL betting win this week over the 3-1 Washington Redskins to literally save their season, but that is precisely where they are. Look for Philadelphia to finally play up to its clippings on Sunday, October 16th, 2011 at FedEx Field in Landover, MD at 1:00 ET on FOX.

Yes, the Eagles have lost four straight games, but they were without Michael Vick for huge chunks of the first two losses and then shot themselves in the foot with turnovers the last two weeks. If the Eagles can merely hold onto the pigskin, the Eagles should cover the NFL betting lines here vs. a Redskins team that is not as good as its record, especially with Rex Grossman cooling off after a hot start.

The fact that a team with a 1-4 record is a small road favorite over a 3-1 team is an indication of the true talent levels of these clubs, and the Eagles accumulated 489 total yards last week in Buffalo while outgaining the Bills by 158 yards in the 31-24 defeat, only to be outdone by five costly turnovers.

Vick passed for 315 yards and added 90 yards on the ground to break the NFL record for most rushing yards all time by a quarterback, LeSean McCoy rushed for 80 yards on only 11 carries and Jason Avant had 139 receiving yards on 10 receptions, and the Philadelphia offense was unstoppable in the second half.

At least unstoppable by Buffalo that is, but the Eagles did a great job of stopping themselves, especially Avant, who was stripped for two of the turnovers with one being a fumble and one being ruled an interception. The Eagles are averaging 25.0 points on 445.8 total yards per game on a whopping 5.9 yards per rush and 7.6 yards per pass, which is not the resume of a team that is 1-4.

Many experts feel turnovers are random and cannot be handicapped in NFL betting, so if Philadelphia protects the ball, it should put up more than enough points to cover the NFL betting odds here vs. a Washington offense that can be offensively challenged, especially with any hopes for this season on the line with the Eagles knowing they can’t fall four games back in the loss column in the NFC East.

The Redskins only have a two point loss to the Dallas Cowboys where the stiff Washington defense allowed only six field goals, and that defense has been playing well all year. However, we feel the offense has to perform better in this game, as no defense can stop the Eagles right now, and we do not like what we saw from Grossman in a sloppy 17-10 win over the winless Rams last game.

Look for Grossman to struggle again and for Philadelphia to prevail on Sunday!
