The Titans (1-0) and Rams (1-0) both won their preseason openers while covering their assigned NFL betting spreads, with St. Louis blasting the Indianapolis Colts and the Tennessee defense dominating the Minnesota Vikings. We are looking for Tennessee and its defense to prevail once again on Saturday, August 20th from the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO at 8:00 ET.

The most impressive aspect of the defense in Tennessee’s 14-3 win vs. the Vikings was the play of the Titans’ three prized rookies from this year’s draft, as all passed their initial tests with flying colors on the NFL betting lines after seeing limited contact in practice following the lockout. Meanwhile, the Rams’ 33-10 rout must be taken with a grain of salt considering the Colts don’t take preseason seriously.

The Titans in fact turned in possibly the most impressive defensive performance of any team in preseason Week 1, and the three defensive tackles they just drafted, third-rounder Jurrell Casey, fifth-rounder Karl Klug and seventh-rounder Zach Clayton were all major contributors, potentially prompting a healthy competition for some extended playing time this year.

Klug in fact started the game and tackled Adrian Peterson on Minnesota’s first offensive snap. Casey recorded a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on the same play after stripping Lorenzo Booker and Clayton recorded a sack of the future of the Vikings, quarterback Christian Ponder.

Now the Tennessee offense had it problems on the NFL betting odds, as stud running back Chris Johnson continues to hold out. That said, Matt Hasselbeck did complete five of his six passes and the other Titans’ prized rookie, quarterback Jake Locker, showed great poise in his first professional action, completing seven out of 10 passes for 89 yards.

That included a 45-yard touchdown pass on a broken play where Locker fumbled the ball but was composed enough to pick it up and find Yamon Figurs downfield for the score. He will probably be matched up with the Rams’ second team defense in this game, and we favor the Titans with Locker there given that the St. Louis reserves were not that impressive against the pass in Week 1.

As for the Rams, they did look good offensively last week while gaining 169 rushing yards and 173 more through the air, but remember that came vs. a mostly disinterested Indianapolis defense. The most alarming part of that NFL betting win was the fact that the St. Louis defense allowed 202 passing yards to the less-than-imposing Colts’ quarterback threesome of Dan Orlovsky, Curtis Painter and Nate Davis.

We actually like the chances of Tennessee posting an outright upset here, especially if the three defensive rookies continue to progress. However, the hook attached to the field goal on this spread is nice insurance should this game be decided late.
