Last we saw of the AFC East leading New England Patriots, they mounted a late 4th quarter charge against the Dallas Cowboys to pull out the 20-16 home win; the four-point win came up short of covering the seven-point closing spread. The win moved the Patriots to an impressive 5-1 SU and 4-2 against the NFL betting lines. Coach Bill Belichick’s squad has won two of its three games on the road to date beating the Miami Dolphins and Oakland Raiders, but fell short in Buffalo after the Bills fought back from a 21-point deficit to pull off the thrilling come-from-behind outright win and cover as seven-point underdogs. They were off on bye last week, which could spell ultimate doom for Pittsburgh backers considering the Pats have won eight in a row following their off week.

Offensively, the Patriots come at you from all directions be it by land or by air. RB Benjarvus Green-Ellis is the team’s leading rusher (391 yards), but rookie Stevan Ridley looks to be the goods as well having rushed for an average of 6.4 YPC on just 28 carries. Complementing their bruising ground attack is the league’s top ranked passing game (#1 at 350.5 YPG) led by QB Tom Brady. He has numerous weapons to look to in the forms of TEs Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski as well as WRs Wes Welker, Deion Branch and Chad Ochocinco. The defense has been the team’s kryptonite however, as the pass defense ranks dead last in the league (#32) getting torched to the tune of 322.2 yards per game.

The Steelers have been a real tough team to gauge in the early going of the 2011-12 NFL betting lines season. They started the year off with a trouncing at the hands of the Ravens in Baltimore, but followed it up with a blanking of the Seattle Seahawks in their home opener before pulling out a 23-20 win at Indianapolis. Then they lost their second game of the season at Houston (17-10), but head coach Mike Tomlin’s squad has now rattled off three wins in a row after taking care of Tennessee, Jacksonville and Arizona each of the last three weeks.

Today’s game will mark the third time the Steelers will have been dogged this season; they failed to cover both instances. However, this will be the first time they were dogged at home – a role they’ve been in only once the L/5+ seasons. They won that game 15-9 in overtime over Atlanta in Week 1 last year. Pittsburgh had problems rushing the ball early on, but a healthy Rashard Mendenhall torched a better than average Jacksonville run “D” a couple weeks ago at home. Where the Steelers will more than likely look to beat the Pats will be through the air considering QB Ben Roethlisberger has an incredible duo of speedy WRs in Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown to pick NE’s woeful pass defense apart.

NFL Betting Lines Prediction – This is by far the premiere match-up on the Week 8 Sunday morning/afternoon slate. New England went into Heinz Field and embarrassed the Steelers under the Sunday night lights a year ago to move to 4-1 SU & ATS in the conference rivals L/5 overall meetings. Remember though, the Pats entered that game off a head scratching outright loss as four-point road favorites in Cleveland the week before, so Belichick had them ready to go much like he did after they went into Oakland to face the Raiders after falling to the Bills the week before this season.

Having said that, Pittsburgh won’t take kindly to the fact that they’re dogged here; especially when seeking revenge for last year’s defeat. New England’s just 1-2 SU & ATS the L/3 years as a road favorite of three points or less and has failed to cover its last two off a bye. The Steelers counter with a 5-1 ATS mark their L/5 at home and a 13-5 ATS tally their L/18 as an underdog in the PK to 3-point range. Look for the Steelers to protect their house and hand the Patriots the loss they should have probably been handed at home against the Cowboys.
