The Redskins are a perfect 2-0 both straight up and against the NFL odds this preseason, which is in keeping with Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s preseason history, and while the Ravens (1-1) undoubtedly have the better talent here, we are looking for the Skins to cover this rather inflated line on Thursday, August 25th from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD at 8:00 ET on ESPN.
Shanahan was an incredible 41-19 straight up on the NFL odds during preseason while he was coaching the Denver Broncos, and he is now marking his stamp with the Redskins, as his 4-2 preseason mark with Washington makes him 45-21, 68.2 percent in the exhibition season since 1995. John Harbaugh may be on his way to similar success, as he is 9-5 straight up in these games as head coach of the Ravens.
Current Line at Bookmaker: Baltimore (-5½), Total 33½
Washington opened up the 2011 preseason with a nice 16-7 win over the defending AFC Champion Pittsburgh Steelers at home, and they then went on the road and beat the Indianapolis Colts 16-3 last week in a win that was not as impressive, given the Colts’ total indifference during the exhibition season.
Still, given Shanahan’s history, he will probably play to win this week, as Week 3 is traditionally the week when the starters play the longest. The Redskins are 2-0 against the NFL odds in Week 3 since Shanahan took over as their coach, covering the spread in a narrow 27-24 loss to the New England Patriots two years ago and then going on the road and upsetting the New York Jets outright 16-11 last season.
Former Raven John Beck will get the start at quarterback for the Skins, and he was very sharp in his first game action this preseason vs. the Colts, completing 14 out of 17 passes for 140 yards. Baltimore’s offensive coordinator Cam Cameron had nothing but praise for his former pupil, saying “Nothing John can do in a positive way would surprise me.”
As for the Ravens, they did not look good in their preseason opener while losing 13-6 at Philadelphia vs. the Eagles, but they bounced back last week on the NFL odds here at home by beating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13. It must be said though that Baltimore trailed that game 13-10 entering the fourth quarter before the Ravens’ reserves put up 21 points in the final stanza.
Now Baltimore is 2-1 straight up in Week 3 under Harbaugh, and quite a few prognosticators are picking the Ravens as darkhorse Super Bowl candidates, while the Redskins are picked by most to finish dead last in the NFC East. However, we feel that actually works to Washington’s advantage here, as it is more important to the Skins to have a successful preseason while the Ravens have much less incentive.
As we have often said, motivation is everything in preseason, so look for the Redskins to fight to the finish.
NFL Odds Prediction: Take the Washington Redskins +5½
So will the Redskins remain perfect this preseason while Shanahan continues his dominance at this time of year, or will the Ravens win their second straight at home?
