NFL Lines – Minnesota Vikings to Stick Inside Number against Atlanta Falcons

Hopes are high for the Atlanta Falcons (6-4, 4-6 ATS) and Minnesota Vikings (2-8, 4-5-1 ATS) in Week 12, as they get set to face off at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA. The Minneapolis Star Tribune featured an article on Monday asking whether this was the worst team that the Vikings have had in team history. We must admit that it takes a lot of gumption to back Minnesota on the NFL betting lines.

The Vikes are just 2-8, and they have played absolutely atrocious defense over the course of the last several games. The unit has allowed at least 21 points in all five of those games, averaging giving up an absurd 33.0 points per game.

That’s terrible news for rookie Christian Ponder, who is trying to keep up in his first handful of career starts on an iffy team. Ponder has done the best that he can do, throwing for 955 yards and five scores against six picks in his brief time in the saddle.

To make matters worse, Adrian Peterson, arguably the best running back in the game is listed as doubtful on the injury report after suffering an ankle injury last week. That would leave Toby Gerhart to try to tote the rock, leaving virtually the entire Minnesota offense with virtually no experience.

The Falcons badly need to beat the NFL wagering lines in this one to get back in a playoff position. They’re a game back of the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South, and they also enter this weekend a game behind in the chase for the Wild Card slots.

Julio Jones has only caught six passes since Week 4, and he is still out of the lineup with a hamstring injury that has hampered him for well over a month. The offense hasn’t struggled though, scoring at least 23 points in five straight games thanks to the great running game of Michael Turner.

The defense has been cause for concern for those backing the black and red on the NFL gambling lines though, as this unit is conceding 21.3 points per game on the campaign and really sports some inflated numbers thanks to a relatively easy schedule.

NFL Lines Pick – The Falcons have covered eight of their last nine games against teams with losing records, and Minnesota is only 2-9-1 ATS in its last 12 against teams with a winning record. That being said, we are going to buck the trends in this one and stick with Minnesota who’s 3-1-1 ATS following its L/5 pointspread defeats. We don’t think that the Atlanta defense is really going to be able to hold down the Vikes enough to cover this number.
