Though the Vikings have failed to tally scratches in the win column each of the last two weeks, Minnesota has been much more competitive over its last six quarters of football played. Nothing has changed on the defensive side of the ball, as the Vikings still rank amongst the worst in the league on that side of the ball – #19 in yards allowed (362.7 YPG) and #26 in points allowed (25.4 PPG) – but the reversal of fortune has come on the offensive side of the ball with rookie QB Christian Ponder now at the helm in favor of the benched Donovan McNabb.

Sure, Minnesota saw its slim halftime lead evaporate in the blink of an eye to start the second half last week, but Minnesota remained competitive even though the reigning Super Bowl champs rattled off the games next 20 points to get ahead of the game’s closing NFL betting odds. In the end, the Vikings scored the final 10 points of the game to improve to 3-3-1 against the number on the year. Even though his overall numbers weren’t pretty (13/32 for 219 yards 2 TD & T INT), Ponder has breathed new life into the Vikings attack and it should be able to navigate even more freely against a less than impressive Panthers stop unit.

Carolina has been a nice surprise in the first year of the Ron Rivera era. This franchise looked destined to bring up the rear of the NFC South for years to come after managing 8-8 SU & 2-14 SU records each of the last two seasons. Thankfully, last year’s putrid effort reeled them in the top overall pick in the draft, and with it came QB Cam Newton who has done nothing but impress since taking his first snap under center at the professional level.

The Auburn product has already thrown for 2103 yards, and though he sports an 8:9 TD/INT ratio, he’s also dazzled on the ground where he’s run for 266 yards and a whopping seven TDs. He had one of his best efforts of the young NFL odds season last week against a stout Washington defense completing 18-of-23 passes for 256 yards and a score with no INTs, so it’s safe to say he can build on that performance against the league’s 29th ranked pass defense (274.9 YPG) that hasn’t picked an opposing QB off each of the last two weeks.

NFL Odds Prediction – Both team’s offensive strengths play right into the hands of the defenses weaknesses in this match-up between first round quarterback selections. The Panthers can’t stop the run which in turn will allow RB Adrian Petersen to have a field day. On the flipside, the Vikings can’t stop the pass so the pass-catch duo of Newton and WR Steve Smith are in store for another huge afternoon. On top of it, both offenses have excelled converting third downs while the Panthers and Vikings defenses rank 30th and 24th respectively in getting off the field on third down. The chains will be moving at a rampant clip with big plays abundant in this Week 8 battle. All three of Carolina’s home games have gone ‘over’ the closing number, while the high side of the total has been reached in each of Minnesota’s last two games with Ponder at the controls.
