CFB Odds – Michigan State Spartans unable to exchange blows with ultra potent Wisconsin Badgers
Written by North Shore Sports, INC
The pecking order within the Big 10 will be severely tested at Bookmaker Sportsbook when the Wisconsin Badgers head into East Lansing to battle the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday night.
NCAAF Betting Online:
Week 8 of the CFB odds season closes out with a doozy at Spartan Stadium where the Michigan State Spartans (5-1, 4-2 ATS) will look to remain perfect at home when they host the Wisconsin Badgers (6-0, 5-0-1 ATS) on Saturday, October 22nd, 2011; live coverage in East Lansing will be covered by ESPN and ESPN3.com at 8:00 ET.
NCAA Football Betting Odds
Wisconsin Badgers (-8) -110
Michigan State Spartans (+8) -110
Over/Under 47.5
Save for taking their foot off the gas pedal way back in Week 1 against the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, the Badgers have been an unstoppable moneymaking ATS machine. They enter this primetime spot a perfect 6-0 SU and 5-0-1 ATS after dismantling the Indiana Hoosiers 59-7 as 38-point chalk in the University’s Homecoming Game last week. Having said that, this will be the first time Wiscy will venture away from Madison for a true road game this season. The last venue they lost in came right here where Sparty upended them 34-24 as 1.5-point underdogs last season.
For years, Wisconsin was known as a running team that loved to barrage its CFB odds opponents with a number of bodies out of the backfield. However, with free agent QB Russell Wilson coming in from NC State this past off-season, the Badgers now possess a dynamic 1-2 punch both on the ground and through the air. The senior has thrown for 1557 yards while averaging an insane 12.16 yards per pass attempt to go along with an almost perfect 14/1 TD/INT ratio. The #1 scoring attack in the country will have its hands full however, as the Spartans possess the 7th ranked overall defense (268 YPG) and 3rd ranked scoring defense (9.7 PPG).
Michigan State enters this cross-divisional showdown off an impressive domination of the in-state rival Michigan Wolverines. Denard Robinson had gone off against many of the Wolverines opponents to start the year, but the Spartans defense put an end to that by limiting him to 123 yards through the air, but most importantly, just 42 yards on 18 carries on the ground. That in and of itself shows just how locked in and nasty head coach Mark Dantonio’s stop unit can be. To date, only Michigan and Notre Dame have tallied double digits against MSU!
Now, it’s completely understood that Sparty’s defense will show up for this enormous Big 10 CFB odds clash, but the offense is going to have to muster more than it has of late to pull the upset. QB Kirk Cousins has plenty of big game experience, but the senior must churn out more than the 120 yards passing yards he put forth last week for the Spartans to hang in this contest. Maybe RB Edwin Baker can build off of his 167 yard showing from last week, and take advantage of the Badgers weak link on defense that’s seen them give up an average of 123.2 YPG (#42) on the ground.
CFB Odds Prediction – This Big 10 rivalry has been dominated by the home team who has won each of the L/6 encounters (4-2 ATS). MSU surely seems to be attractive getting over a TD at home after handling Michigan with ease last week, but the Wolverines are by no means as balanced and potent on both sides of the ball as the Badgers. Sure, this is Wiscy’s first true road game, but head coach Bret Bielema’s squad has represented well as a visitor going 5-2 ATS their L/7 and they’ve covered each of their L/8 conference tussles. Though the underdog has covered four of the L/5 in the recent series, Wilson and the Badgers will be too much for the Spartans to keep up with. It also doesn’t hurt that Wisconsin owes them one after falling late last season, so don’t look for Bielema to call the dogs off in this spot!
