After dropping each of their first two games of the season in heartbreaking fashion, Coach Brian Kelly’s Fighting Irish have evened their 2011 campaign up after taking care of the Michigan State Spartans and Pittsburgh Panthers each of the last two weeks.

It was far from pretty at Heinz Field last week, but a win is a win any way you look at it regardless of the fact that Notre Dame once again failed to cover the closing number. Still, there was some good and some bad to take away from the game. The good: Notre Dame got to the QB six times and got constant pressure on Tino Sunseri throughout. The bad: turnovers.

For its fourth straight game, Notre Dame lost the turnover battle. QB Tommy Rees has had a hand in nine of the Irish’s 15 turnovers to date, and the youngster’s poor decision making in the red zone has taken points off the board numerous times. Still, he completed all eight of his passes on the game winning drive, making believers of Coach Kelly who inserted him into the QB1 slot after the half of their Week 1 match-up with South Florida.

“He’s growing up and seeing some things,” said Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. “There were some new looks for him that he had not seen before that we had to adjust. And after Tommy sees it, he gets much more comfortable.”

Purdue enters this Week 5 NCAA sportsbook betting tussle off its bye a week after pummeling SE Mizzou State 59-0 to improve to 2-1 SU on the year. There’s not much to go by on the Boilers pertaining to their overall abilities, as the club failed to cover against both of its FBS opponents as favorites in Middle Tennessee State and Rice (lost outright).

The success of Coach Danny Hope’s offense is predicated entirely on the unit’s ability to get things done on the ground. QB Ralph Bolden and RB Akeem Shavers are the leading rushers checking in with 223 and 186 yards respectively on the young season. The duo has the offense ranked 9th in the country (259 YPG) on the ground, but there’s really no semblance of a passing attack that’s averaged just 212 YPG (#73) through the air to date.

Not good news when matched up against a Notre Dame defense that’s excelled in containing opposing ground attacks but checks in ranked 82nd in the country in defending the pass (240 YPG). Defensively, the Boilermakers have been stout against the run (#37 at 109 YPG) but beatable through the air (#60 at 212.7 YPG). The 16 PPG allowed to date is solid (#19), but remember, Purdue is really yet to face an upper echelon offensive attack.

NCAA Sportsbook Betting Prediction – This rivalry has been of the snoozer variety each of the last two seasons with the ‘under’ cashing with ease, and we’re looking for more of the same this evening. While the Irish will no doubt have some success through the air, they have to prove they won’t leave points on the field with costly turnovers before we entertain laying this type of number with them on the road. Instead, look for them to work out the kinks and win their third straight from the Boilermakers in an ugly low scoring battle.
