Quinton “Rampage” Jackson with a record of 30-7 lost to Evans on The Ultimate Fighter 10 tv show. Now this will be the perfect opportunity to see two great fighters with a lot of animosity between them. Rampage has excellent wrestling skills, good technical striking skills, particularly of the boxing variety. But Rampage is about power. He’s as strong as a bull and hits like one too. What’s more, since PRIDE’s fall he’s really improved his conditioning and overall skill set. May be this is what this fighter needed after all to get back to the way he started. When it comes to submissions or ground fighting, Rampage doesn’t have much to offer buthe will be bringing a lot of pain, he wants Evans to remember why this is one of the most anticipated match ups this year. Besides his amazing striking power, Rampage needs to perform a little better on the floor, with this weakness he leaves a lot in the air, he might be put on his back at least a couple of times by Evans and he needs to be able to counter strike from that position and to be able to resist the submission and that is something e is just not good at. If Rampage decides to change his fighting ways and use the wrestling skills he already has then he will have a great chance to beat Evans and punish him as he wants to.

“Suga” Rashad Evans with a record of 14-1-1 has top notch wrestling skills and this will make a very interesting match between two great wrestlers who love to strike. He also fights out of one of the best camps in the world- Jackson’s MMA in New Mexico- which has allowed him to improve from a good boxer on his feet to an excellent all around striker. But Evans’ most impressive characteristics are his speed and athleticism. Very few fighters have his speed and athletic conditions, and if I think hard there are none on his weight class that actually “outclass” him in these two characteristics. Evans is a wrestler who likes to punch and punish his adversaries with everything he has and his style is almost the same as Rampage but Evans is way better at wrestling so this could mean a better set of skills for ground work. Evans look more than ready for this fight and in my opinion he has the advantage but it will come to who will punch harder and who has the best skills for submissions.

PREDICTION

If Jackson lands his punches while he is on his feet, Evans might be in trouble. If Rampage takes the top position on the ground, same outcome, but Evans trains hard and is more technically sound than his adversary, he’s faster and has a more diverse striking game. This should allow him to move in and out of harm’s way on his feet fluidly. Evans is also a better pure wrestler than Rampage, which should allow him to avoid bad spots on the ground. My pick will be “Suga” Rashad Evans to win by decision.

Machida ranked as one of the best Light Heavyweight champs in the history of UFC and undefeated in 16 fights is clearly the favorite to retain his title. The brazilian fighter is an expert on Karate since he started in this discipline when he was 3 years old. Trained by his father Yoshizo Machida also an expert in Shotokan Karate became interested in Sumo and now in Jiu jitsu making a great combination with his karate skills and developing into a real threat for his adversaries. Machida holds an undefeated record that includes notable victories over Stephan Bonnar, Thiago Silva, Tito Ortiz, Rich Franklin, B.J. Penn, Rashad Evans and Mauricio Rua, quite a few names for someone with “karate skills”. The fact that Machida only racks up 5 knock outs tells me that he is powerful but not a killer when it comes to resolve a fight, he waits and does his fight without letting it go to his head. He has also won two fights by submission and the fighter holds a black belt in brazilian jiu jitsu but his strenght is the kicks and the fully japanese Shotokan Karate. Machida has become a somehow conservative fighter that waits for his opponent’s mistakes and capitalize on them and that is not exciting in the fans’ point of view but they all respect him, he can finish just about anyone by punches, submission, kicks or any other weapon he posseses. The best strategy against Rua will be to wait and check what Rua brings into the Octagon, Machida doesn’t have to make a big display of his skills, he needs to analize the fight and try to land as many punches and kicks as he can and forced Rua to go out hunting and to make mistakes standing, I don’t think Machida can handle Rua’s ground technic.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua: Record 18-4-0, 6′1″ (1.85 m) and 205 lbs (93 kg).

Rua is probably the best contender to the Light Heavyweight division in UFC’s history. Rua is the winner of the PRIDE Fighting Championship’s 2005 Middleweight Grand Prix and holds wins over Chuck Liddell, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Alistair Overeem on two occaisions, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The powerful fighter has 15 wins by knock out which indicates that Rua is a very powerful puncher and his brazilian jiu jitsu skills take him to a different level and this is exactly why he has been ranked #2 in the world in this weight class. His fighting style combines Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a perfect balance so Rua can knock you out cold from kicks, punches or basically he will throw you to the ground and then go to work on you. Rua’s quality allows him to knock anyone out by punches so he is a more flashy fighter than his opponent Machida and the fans enjoy him a lot more so basically this could be a match for the UFC fans worldwide. Rua’s best strategy will be to open up and punch Machida without risking his integrity and leaving too many spots for Machida to take advantage. Rua needs to be smart and only strike when Machida is not expecting it, that way he can counter punch and look for the knock out by punches or by submission if they go to the ground.

A few nights are as good as this for all MMA fans out there. UFC has brought the best of the best and for this night only they willl give us Two title bouts and a Legends fight. Let’s check each one of these fights and make some predictions on them …

Middleweight Title Bout

Anderson “The Spider” Silva from Brazil and at age 34 is the most dominant middleweight champ ever to set foot on the octagon. His vast experience shows a record of 25 wins and 4 losses but Silva’s career in UFC shows no defeats, the record on UFC events is 10-0. Silva has beaten big names like Rich Franklin (twice), Patrick Cote and Forrest Griffin, all of them by knock out and that makes me think twice about the outcome of this fight. His strenghts are a well rounded skills and a phenomenal striking technic and that only makes matters worst for his opponents.

Demian Maia also born in Brazil is the master of submission. Maia brazilian jiu jitsu skills are out of this World and he is planning to use them against Silva, it will be his only advantage against him. His overall record at MMA is 12 wins and 1 loss but his UFC record shows 6-1, all his wins but one by submission. Now, as a foot note fighter Nate Marquardt knocked him out cold last August in 21 seconds and that will be something to consider not that he faces the best stricker of the middleweight class. Maia’s strategy will be to stay away from Silva’s fists and try to take the fight to the ground all night long, that could be all he can do to stop a monster like Silva.

Lightweight Title Bout

BJ “The Prodigy” Penn born in Hawaii and at age 31 has accomplished a record of 15 wins, 5 losses and 1 draw. His strenghts are excellent submission skills and strong standup fighting technic which makes him extremely dangerous and that is why he is the reigning champ at lightweight division. His fights have been more than amazing but he has been defeated twice by Georges St-Pierre, basically outclassed by him and his great fighting technics. Besides those two losses he has been able to beat big names like Kenny Florian, Sean Sherk, Matt Serra and once Matt Hughes (he lost the rematch) also on this night’s fight card. I think it will be an easy night for Penn and his skills will be showing very early.

Frankie “The Answer” Edgar at age 28 and smaller than Penn shows a MMA overall record of 11 wins and 1 loss. His strenghts are great wrestling skills and awesome cardio that could give him the edge in a close match against the champ. His UFC record is 6-1 losing against Gray Maynard by unanimous decision which is basically the only way he has been able to win at UFC. He has only one knock out and one submission which means he is not a powerful striker or a great submission master and he will need those two in order to go toe to toe with Penn.

Legends fight

Matt Hughes, one of the most famous fighters the UFC has ever seen is by far the biggest favorite at this event. His overall record shows 44 wins and 7 losses and obviously the experience is on his side. At age 36, his strenghts are superb takedowns, superior wrestling ability and great physical strenght that all combined make him a very dangerous fighter. Hughes has faced pretty much everyone, huge names like Georges St-Pierre, Matt Serra, BJ Penn, Frank Trigg and Royce Gracie. He has fought every style available at UFC so Renzo will not be a surprise and I am sure it will be a fight to remember.

Renzo Gracie UFC debut couldn’t be better and in a better event than this. Him as a brazilian jiu jitsu legend gets to face Hughes as a UFC Hall of Famer and one of the best fighters ever seen on the Octagon. He’s the son of Robson Gracie, grandson of Carlos Gracie, nephew and 6th degree black belt of Carlos Gracie, Jr. and grandnephew of Helio Gracie. Talking about a family that knows about brazilian jiu jitsu and mainly about UFC, they have been around for ages and the training Renzo had had is just out of this World. Gracie has competed both in BJJ and mixed martial arts events such as the PRIDE Fighting Championships, the International Fight League, RINGS, Martial Arts Reality Superfighting (MARS) and the World Combat Championship with great results. Renzo Gracie is the head instructor at the Renzo Gracie Academy in midtown Manhattan. Many well known BJJ and MMA fighters have been trained by Renzo, including BJJ black belts Rodrigo Gracie, current UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre, former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra, former BJJ World Champion Rafael “Gordinho” Correa, Paul Creighton, former Middleweight King of Pancrase Ricardo Almeida, Sean Alvarez, Alan Teo, Mike Codella, Carl Massaro, Shawn Williams,Gabe Koura, Chad Lebrun and GRACIE Magazine founder Luca Atalla. With this experience he could be an interesting match for Hughes and makes the prediction tougher.

Let’s have a quick look at the main event of the evening between canadian Georges St-Pierre and british Dan Hardy and their BIOS:

Georges “Rush” St-Pierre was born in Montreal, Quebec in Canada and at age 28 looks like the most powerful welterweight champ the UFC has ever had. His overall MMA record shows 19-2-which is every impressive for his age. His strenghts are his clear athleticism and his well round skills when it comes to fighting toe to toe. St-Pierre can outbox pretty much any welterweight fighter and his speed and reach are the full combo needed to be considered one of the best fighters that have ever walked in the octagon. Last time he lost a fight was on April 2007 so he is looking to increase his winning streak to 7 wins in a row. Last fighters he defeated are Thiago Alves, BJ Penn, Jon Fitch, Matt Serra, Matt Hughes, and Josh Koscheck. If we check these names are huge, there are incredible fighters and St-Pierre was able to beat them all and in some cases knocked them out cold like the BJ Penn fight. He looks powerful and quick and he is hungry so it will be hard to beat a guy who just don’t want to let go of a good thing like the UFC.

Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy born in Nottingham, United Kingdom and so far at age 27 with an overall record of 23-6-0 with 1 nc looks like the ideal challenge for St-Pierre. His skills are great striking technic, superb resilience and out-of-this-world speed that could easily match the canadian so this will be a pretty even fight. Hardy’s career in UFC started at UFC 89 against Akihiro Gono and since then he has fought 3 other times with the same outcome, a big W. Hardy is looking to win his fifth fight in a row and obviously he is looking to crush St-Pierre out of his championship, he is mean and he is looking to make a name for himself as a well rounded fighter but that will not be so easy although this is a pretty even match.

My prediction will be PAIN. Both fighters have the hand speed to knock anyother fighter out cold but we are talking about two lightning speed fighters facing eachother so if there will be a KO I believe it will happen in the second round. St-Pierre has the crowd, Hardy is far from home so that could be a factor but I don’t think it will determine the outcome of the fight. My pick for this fight will be Georges “Rush” St-Pierre -700 to knock Hardy out in the second round.

Brandon “The Truth” Vera was born in Norfolk, Virginia but he’s fighting out of San Diego which is not odd since most of the MMA experts look at California as the state to grow on the sport. At age 32 he is looking to give us another great show using his excellent skills in muay thai and awesome grappling technics that could be very useful againsxt a natural wrestler like Jones. Vera combines a great use of knees, elbows and overall kicks that could knock anyone out at any given time, this could be his most useful weapon to keep Jones away at least for a while. Vera’s grappling technics are also very good but in this fight it will not be convenient to use a close body contact tactic since Jones will be able to flip him in any way he can so the best for Vera will be to kick and punch as fast as possible to keep Jones guessing what will be next. Brandon “The Truth” Vera lost his last fight against veteran Randy “The Natural” Couture by unanimous decision and it was a close fight but I am wondering if he has actually bounced back from that dissapointing match.

Jon “Bones” Jones is a world class wrestler that a young age started in the MMA world and surprised everyone. At age 22 Jones has great skills as we mentioned in wrestling but also he completes the package with a set of Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai technics that could give him the edge. He can throw kicks and punches like the rest of fighters but he will be a real threat when he fights close to his opponent, his ground work is very complete for someone so young and I believe he will based his strategy on that, trying to bring Vera to the ground and go to work on him. The KO looks very hard since both fighters will have different agendas but I cannot deny the possibility of a Submission, basically the fight could go all the way if Vera takes care of himself and doesn’t let Jones get too close. Jones was born on Rochester, Ny and he fights out of Endicott, NY. Jones got disqualified in his last fight against Matt Hamill in heavyweight division so he dropped some of that weight and now he will make a move on the best of the Lightheavyweight scene. At his young age Jones has only won 9 fights and lost 1 so this could be the beginning of a great UFC career.

The other interesting event will be a heavyweight fight between Junior Dos Santos age 26 and Gabriel Gonzaga age 30. Now this fight is not the main event but I believe it will be equally exciting, both fighters are super strong, they have great boxing skills and the could knock eachother out in a heart beat. This will be a typical heavyweight match and i expect to see no more than two rounds, these events usually are quick, someone will get their lights out before the 2nd round is over.

My prediction for the main event is a tough one. Vera has the experience on his side but Jones is a better ground fighter so that makes me think twice about it. In the other match my pick will be Gabriel Gonzaga since he has more experience and hehas better skills than Dos Santos. My pick will be Gabriel Gonzaga +215.

The UFC takes Australia by storm for the first time and fans will be treated to explosive matchups featuring two early Fight of The Year candidates. In the main event, a world heavyweight title shot is on the line when unbeaten Cain Velasquez takes on former UFC and PRIDE champion Antonio Rodrigo �Minotauro� Nogueira. Plus, UK superstar Michael �The Count� Bisping hopes to spoil the middleweight debut of the legendary �Axe Murderer�, Wanderlei Silva.

This will be the first time the Ultimate Fighting Championship travels to the Down under land and the fans couldn’t be more excited about it. This is a very expected match between two great fighters, the challenger a youngster dying to prove he is worth it against a made champ like Nogueira that has won in many countries and has a lot of experience.

Minotauro Nogueira at age 33 has proven to the World that he belongs in the ellite of UFC and MMA. Fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil he will travel to Australia to face a young fighter that in my opinion is still not mature enough for this kind of challenge. Nogueira best attributes are incredible stamina which means he really trains like the champ he is, awesome jiu-jitsu skills that usually help him win fights and to complete a well-rounded fighter superb boxing skills that are tough to match. Minotauro’s MMA record is 32-5-1 with 1 no contest and with those numbers it’s very hard to imagine a fair competition. Nogueira has won 3 of his last 4 fights against big names like Randy Couture, Tim Sylvia and Heath Herring so that could be considered a good message to Velazquez “watch the hands and better move quick”. Some ranks and titles Nogueira have held are Interim UFC Heavyweight Champion. WEC Title in 1999, Rings 16 man tournament 2000, PRIDE Heavyweight Belt. Black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo (received both in 1999).

Cain Velazquez still undefeated with a record of 7-0-0 fighting out of San Jose, California but born in Salinas, California represents Nogueira’s chance to be back in the spotlight since he will be fighting against an undefeated well rounded and younger fighter. Velazquez at age 27 has same weight as Minotauro but the reach will be a problem since Nogueira it’s a bit taller so the logic indicates a close fight body to body but Nogueira is too experienced for that so Velazquez will have to come up with something incredibly clever if he wants this match to go in his favor. The scenario is set and since Velazquez won 4 out of his last 5 fights by technical knockout there will be no surprise if he tries to do the same to Nogueira but he has to be careful not to put down his guard and let Nogueira get too close or it will be over for Velazquez by submission.

The prediction could be a long fight with an unanimous decision, i don’t believe it will be a Ko since both fighters are in awesome shape and their skills won’t allow the opponent to get too close to be able to win by submission or TKO. In my opinion Nogueira has more experience and he has more skills in his side o the point here is how much punishment can Velazquez take. My pick will be Antonio “Minotauro” Nogueira +105 to win by unanimous decision.

The biggest sports weekend of the year gets even bigger with UFC 109: RELENTLESS. In the main event, it�s the clash of legends Randy �The Natural� Couture and Mark �The Hammer� Coleman finally square off in a battle for the ages. The UFC’s top two middleweight contenders, Nate Marquardt and Chael Sonnen, collide in a bout that will move the winner one step closer to a world title shot. Plus, two of the game’s 170-pound superstars, former champion Matt Serra and two-time title challenger Frank Trigg, meet for the first time in a pivotal matchup.

The main event brings one fight to be called the battle of hall of Famers. Both are old dogs of the octagon so this fight could be one of the greatest events of the year. �Couture vs. Coleman is one of those dream matchups that fans have always talked about,� UFC president Dana White stated. �And when you consider that these are two of the greatest wrestlers turned mixed martial artists ever, and it�s the first time that two guys who have already earned their way into the UFC Hall of Fame are fighting each other, this is not only an intriguing matchup, but a historic one.�

Randy Couture at age 46 decided to give us one more show and he couldn’t be in better shape for it. His impressive record shows 17 wins and 10 losses and his strengths have always been his wrestling abilities and his great clinch. He can still punch like a youngster and his power hasn’t decrease with age, actually it has increased a bit and may be that could be the card he holds for this fight.

Mark Coleman at age 45 refuses to retire as well. He feels there is something left in him still for one more match. He is also in great shape and let’s remember, these guys are the ones who started all back in the day with UFC 1 through 5 so the experience won’t be a weapon they can use since both have tons. Coleman strengths are obviously his experience on the Octagon, his wrestling abilities and his ground and pound skills that have proven effective years ago. His record is also impressive with 16 wins and 9 losses.

This will be a tough fight to predict. Both fighters come from the same place when it comes to fighting, they won’t give any advantages and they can knock themselves out at any given time if they decide to box each other so the question remains: Will the fight go all the way or will it be a KO? Well I believe the fight will go the whole length and at the end a unanimous decision will crown the winner. My pick for this fight will be Randy “The Natural” Couture.

In his last fight Franklin defeated Wanderlei Silva by unanimous decision in one of the best fights I have ever seen, that shows the kind of fighter he is, he has fought big names too like Ken Shamrock, Anderson Silva, Evan Tanner, etc. His record is 27-4-0 which means this will be a fight to watch over and over again since Franklyn is the smarter fighter and he will use that be beat Belfort by UD.

Vitor Belfort was born at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and at age 31 has an impressive record of 12-5-0 fighting huge names like Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva (won by KO) and the fierce Tank Abbott which he knocked out as well. He retired for many years but now he is back and back for good, he needs to get some good fights and this is exactly what he was looking for, he expects a very good ground fight since he’s is one of the best in the World on ground skills, also his hand speed is incredible but his real strenght and the skill he will use the most will be the submission, only by doing so he will be able to beat a more experienced and smarter Franklin.

THE PREDICTION IN THIS FIGHT IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ONES I HAVE EVER MADE ON UFC BUT MY PICK IS VITOR BELFORT RETURNING TO THE OCTAGON TO TAKE WHAT IS RIGHTFULLY HIS.

Another exciting night of fighting awaits this August 8th at Wachovia Center, PA. This will be the first time UFC travels to Philadelphia and it is expected to be a great event, let’s check who’s in and what are they bringing to the table …

The main event will be BJ “The Prodigy” Penn Vs. Kenny “KenFlo” Florian both very talented athletes and fighters.

BJ “The Prodigy” Penn born in 1978 at Kailua, Hawaii with a record of 13-5-1, weights 155 lbs (70 kg) and his height is 5′9″ which makes him a great welterweight. His strenghts are excellent submissions and overall strong standup technic, very powerful and explosive fighter. In his last fight he lost against Georges St. Pierre by TKO so he’s a little shaken up by that and he will be eager to prove that he still got the power to be holding a title.

Kenny “KenFlo” Florian born 1976 at Westwood, MA with a record of 13-3-0, weighs 155 lbs (70 kg) and his height is 5′10″ with the experience on his side. His strenghts are great jiu-jitsu technic and dangerous elbows and that is a very useful tool in tight situations and in my opinion it will be a rough and tight fight, lots of locks, submissions, chokes and more, elbows will be a key ingredient to this match.

Taking into consideration that Florian has won his last 6 fights looks a little to his side but his last fight was on november 15th 2008 and that is a while back so BJ Penn looks like a better overall option. MY PICK FOR THIS FIGHT WILL BE KENNY FLORIAN, HIS SKILLS ARE A LITTLE BETTER THAN PENN’S AND HE IS MORE EXPERIENCED.

UFC 101 Declaration Odds and Predictions

UFC brings us another night of exciting MMA night. This time will be a titanic battle between two giants, Lesnar at 6′3″ and 265 pounds against Mir at 6′3′ as well and 240 pounds. This event will be at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Nevada and it will be another classic UFC PPV night.

Brock Lesnar just started at UFC and he has been making a lot of noice at the heavyweight division. His record only shows 3 wins and one loss and his strenghts are incredible size, great wrestling ability and athleticism beyond comparison; he has knocked out good fighters too, he is scary when he is on the move and his punches are just like a hammer ready to do the damage, his power has no comparison, we will be able to see him pounding on everyone with no mercy, basically he is the most bankable star the UFC has for the future.

Frank Mir has alot more experience than Lesner, his record is 12 wins and 3 losses, his advantages are great submissions and an improved striking technic, this will be totally necessary if he wants Lesnar to at least fakes some concern, last time Mir defeated Lesnar with a Leg Lock and so far it has been the only loss on Lesnar career, the submission will the only chance Mir has against Lesnar.

In my opinion the night will be spectacular, Mir and Lesnar will give us another lesson on why the big man is not always the winner, my pick is Mir winner by submission AGAIN and survive one more UFC night although he will receive some punishment just to step up and face a real threat, a challenge beyond anything else he has ever faced, he will be punch and he will be punish but the “smaller guy” will defeat Lesnar.
