The FedEx Cup is a championship trophy for the PGA Tour. It is the first time that men’s professional golf will have playoffs and ultimately a champion who will be handsomely rewarded by the good folks at FedEx with a purse of $10,000,000 and an sleek stylish trophy. Announced in November 2005, it will be awarded starting in 2007 after a NASCAR-like points race. This competition will be sponsored by FedEx.
The ultimate goal is to be among the Top 144 Points Leaders following the Wyndham Championship. Only those players who are regular full-time members of the PGA Tour will earn points. A non-member who joins the PGA Tour in mid-season will be eligible to earn points in the first event he plays after officially joining the Tour.
After the Wyndham Championship, points for all eligible players are reset. With this scale, the first place regular season points leader will get 100,000 points, second place will receive 99,000, and then a sliding scale through 144th place receiving 84,700 points. The top 144 players will advance to the playoffs. The points on the reset scale will carry over into the playoffs. This is the equivalent of “seeding” as players who have performed better during the regular season will more likely advance past the first tournament in the playoffs.
The 1st leg of the 4 tourney playoff will be held on Aug 23rd – 26th at The Barclays at Westchester CC in Rye, NY. This event will be worth 50,000 points and defending champ Vijay Singh will need every bit of those points to stay at the top of the standings.¼br> The 2nd leg will be on Aug 31st – Sept 3rd at TPC Boston for the Deutsche Bank Championship. Whose title belongs to…big surprise!!! Tiger Woods should he win again, the 50,000 points he will earn will put him at almost an insurmountable lead for the FedEx Cup.
The 3rd leg is the BMW Championship at Cog Hill GC&C from Sept 6th – 9th, again this event will be worth 50,000 points and could be the ultimate decider when determining who really has a chance to compete heading into the final leg.¼br> The Final tournament to decide a winner will be the Tour Championship at East Lake, Georgia from Sept 13th – 16th.
This being the inaugural year of the FedEx Cup it really hasn’t taken hold yet and the fans as well as the players are still confused as to exactly how it all works but look for some odds on winning the FedEx Cup leading up to The Barclays next week.
