The final NFL betting match-up of the 2010 exhibition season is set to kick off at 10:00 ET from Candlestick Park where the San Francisco 49ers will look to churn out an unblemished preseason record against the San Diego Chargers.

QB Philip Rivers and the 1st team offense went toe to toe with the Saints #1’s, and departed only trailing 17-14. The opening drive of the game saw the Chargers cover 82 yards in 12 plays and take a 7-0 lead when RB Jacob Hester barreled into the end zone from six-yards out.

They then tied the game up late in the 2nd quarter when Rivers and WR Malcolm Floyd connected from nine-yards out; the TD pass was Rivers’ second of the preseason.

Through three preseason game, the Chargers stand 1-2 SU & ATS with the lone win and cover coming back in Week 1 at home against the Chicago Bears.

Allowing 20.7 PPG finds San Diego ranked 16th in points allowed to date. Though they’ve stuffed opposing ground attacks (#7 at 77 YPG), the pass defense has been leaky allowing an average of 243.7 YPG (#27). Hopefully this isn’t a sign of things to come in the regular season. If so, it looks as if upper management made the wrong decision in shipping CB Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets.

Rookie RB Ryan Mathews has filled in admirably for the departed LaDainian Tomlinson. In three games played, the Fresno State product has ripped off 146 yards on 34 carries (4.3 YPC) with longs of 18 and 16 yards.

With both Rivers and Mathews having gotten enough work in the preseason, don’t look for either to see much of any action this evening.

You got to love the way Head Coach Mike Singletary has his men playing right now! The guy was a proven winner when he played LB for the Chicago Bears, and he’s carried that mindset over to the Bay and instilled it into his players. He’s now 6-1 SU & 4-3 ATS in the exhibition season as the Niners head coach.

San Francisco has been flying up and down the field throughout the entirety of the preseason. The 37-17 romp of the Colts in their preseason opener set the stage for what was to come the next two weeks.

They took care of the Minnesota Vikings in Brett Favre’s debut winning and covering as 2.5-point home chalk, and followed it up with an impressive battle at Oakland where they won by a 28-24 final tally last week.

That said; QB Alex Smith and the Niners passing game continue to be the only detriment. Managing just 187 YPG, the Niners passing attack ranks 24th overall (4 YPG less than 2009-10’s seasonal average). However, the ground attack has churned out an average of 125.7 YPG (#7).

The Niners defense will bring it on every down, and they have thus far already securing an absurd eight sacks in their three games played. This unit will only get better as the season progresses provided it remains relatively healthy.

The Chargers have won six of the L/7 preseason battles with the Niners, and the ‘over’ has cashed five of the L/6 times these clubs squared off at Candlestick; look for both of those trends to go up in smoke this time around however.

Rodgers tossed three TDs and converted 72 percent of his passes for 195 yards in what was most likely his final showing before the Packers line it up against the Philadelphia Eagles on opening day. Instead, look for backups Matt Flynn and Graham Harrell to get most of the snaps with the back-up slot yet to be determined.

Another race still to be determined comes in the RB corps where the back-up slots are still up in the air. The Packers come in ranked 8th on the ground chewing up an average of 124.3 YPG in the exhibition season. Look for RBs Kregg Lumpkin, Brandon Jackson, and Quinn Porter to share most of tonight’s snaps.

Numerous defensive starters sat out last week’s home game, and it wouldn’t be shocking in the least if they were all held out of this one as well.

Though Kansas City is yet to scratch the win column, it’s gotten progressively better with every passing week; in terms of offensive points production that is.

QB Matt Cassel threw his second TD of the preseason at home last week against the Philadelphia Eagles, but also tossed his first interception. The passing game has been absent from the Chiefs attack averaging just 161.7 YPG (#29) in three games.

It wouldn’t at all be shocking to see Cassel get some playing time in this one since the coaching staff by no means can be satisfied with what they’ve seen thus far. If he does get a couple reps, look for backups Tyler Palko and Brodie Croyle to finish it up.

That said; the ground attack has picked right back up where it left off a year ago with RBs Jamaal Charles and backup Thomas Jones helping KC rank second overall ripping off an average of 150 YPG.

Defensively, the Chiefs have surrendered 20 points in each of their three preseason games played to date. The stop unit has been stingy against the pass allowing just 174 YPG (#5), but has been below average defending the run allowing 101.7 YPG (#17).

The ‘under’ has cashed for NFL preseason bettors in nine of KC’s L/12 home games (9-2-1 ATS), and the home team has won each of these teams previous two exhibition season meetings.

The stars of HBO’s Hard Knocks miniseries have already started feeling the jinx of the show with a number of things failing to go their way throughout the preseason.

The most glaring problem the Jets have entering this week’s battle with the Eagles is their inability to put points on the board offensively. QB Mark Sanchez has had a miserable time of it. With the offense struggling immensely, he saw his way into the 4th quarter of last week’s game at home against the Washington Redskins when he threw his lone TD pass to give the Jets the short lived lead.

The rushing attack has at the very least given New York’s stellar defense a chance to catch its collective breath on the sideline as its rushed for an average of 113.3 YPG (#12) to date. Unfortunately, the passing attack currently ranks 30th overall scratching out a paltry 140.7 YPG. By not offering up much in the way of supporting Sanchez, Jets brass most recently made the decision to cut WR Laveranues Coles who will more than likely end up retiring.

Astute NFL bettors know the defense is what makes the Jets machine hum, so at least their fans and betting backers can take solace in the fact that its allowed a total of just 50 points through three games; most of those points came against the reserves. It currently ranks 7th overall (273.3 YPG) and 3rd against the rush allowing just 75.7 YPG. It has however been leaky in the secondary where its allowed a shade under 198 YPG; Revis Island – where you at?!

As for Philadelphia, it’s had no problem moving up and down the field with its compliment of QBs, but it’s had one heck of a time getting into the end zone. K David Akers has been the team’s MVP throughout preseason betting as he’s converted all 10 of his FG attempts.

Unfortunately, only managing field goals won’t win Head Coach Andy Reid’s club many games this 2010-11 NFL betting season. QB Kevin Kolb has experienced success at this level in the regular season, but he’s far from shown he can handle the duties of an every game starter through three preseason games.

The Houston Product is yet to throw a TD pass thus far, yet did throw his first interception last week at Kansas City. Michael Vick hasn’t fared much better either also without a TD pass but three INTs.

What the Eagles have done right is rush the ever living heck out of the ball as the RB corps has chewed the turf up to the tune of 147.4 yards per game; good for the league’s second best mark in the exhibition season.

The defense has been middle tier ranking in the middle of the pack against the pass (#17 at 223 YPG), rush (#14 at 96 YPG), and points allowed (#20 at 22 PPG).

New York has dominated Philadelphia in the preseason winning 11 of the L/12 overall meetings; the Eagles have failed to cover each of the Jets L/6 exhibition visits (0-5-1 ATS).

NFL Predictions – Indianapolis Colts look to close the book on the preseason vs. the Cincinnati Bengals

Though this is only the exhibition season, the Colts are yet to win a game and have looked relatively awful in producing an 0-3 SU & ATS tally.

Indianapolis hasn’t taken much stock in the exhibition season ever since Tony Dungy took over the reins of the franchise. Last week’s annihilation at the hands of the Green Bay Packers now finds them a putrid 2-10 SU & 3-9 ATS their L/12 preseason games. Yet, Peyton Manning and company have taken home the AFC South honors six of the L/7 years.

However, there is cause for concern heading into the regular season, as Indy has been outscored by an aggregate score of 130-62. The defense has given up an absurd average of 43.3 PPG; dead last in the league. It also ranks 30th in total yards allowed (377.3 YPG) and passing yards allowed (254.3 YPG) as well as 28th in rushing yards allowed (123 YPG).

On top of that, Peyton Manning hasn’t looked great the last couple weeks completing just 23-of-41 passes with a TD/INT ratio of 3/2. He will more than likely sit this one out allowing Curtis Painter and the other projected back-ups to compete for the 2nd and 3rd string duties.

On the flipside, the Bengals come in 2-2 SU & ATS after falling to Buffalo in Week 3 preseason betting action. Though they suffered the defeat, Head Coach Marvin Lewis has to be more than pleased with the production of his offense.

The Bengals passing attack grossly faltered down the stretch last season, but it looks to be a main strength of the offense after churning out its most impressive effort against the Bills last week.

QB Carson Palmer completed a shade under 82 percent of his passes for 95 yards and tossed a pair of TD passes to rookie TE Jermaine Gresham and WR Chad OchoCinco. Terrell Owens even reeled in three passes for 35 yards.

With this being the fifth preseason game for the Bengals, don’t look for the regulars to have much of an impact in this one. Instead, expect to see a ton of J.T O’Sullivan and Jordan Palmer who continue to battle to win the back-up job.

The Bengals first team defense got a dose of stud rookie RB C.J. Spiller last week, but overall in the preseason, the stop unit has held its own. It enters its final preseason battle ranked 13th overall in yards allowed (300.8) but just 21st in points allowed (21 PPG).

Cincinnati has dominated the Colts in the preseason for NFL bettors winning each of the teams L/8 battles ATS; Indy has failed to cover the closing NFL odds each of the L/5 times it hosted the Bengals in the exhibition season.

On offense, the Steelers currently rank fifth in the league in total offense at 349.0 yards per game and ninth in scoring offense at 23.5 points per contest. They are also sixth in rushing offense and all three of their quarterbacks have played well when called upon.

The defense has been just as good, as the Steelers rank third in scoring defense (12.0 points per game) and tenth in total defense (283.5 yards per game). They are allowing only 6.2 yards per pass attempt and a respectable 3.9 yards per rush.

Tomlin has already stated that he will treat this contest as a regular season dress rehearsal, so it is uncertain if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who is suspended for at least the first four weeks of the season but started last week, will play here. On the flip side, at least you know Tomlin is playing to win!

The same cannot be said for Denver Coach Josh McDaniels, who is now 1-5 in preseason after the Broncos’ 0-2 start. The Broncos opened with a 33-24 loss at Cincinnati, and then lost here at home last week to the lowly Detroit Lions 25-20.

Now, most coaches take the same approach that Tomlin does to Week 3 of preseason, although perhaps not to the extreme he does. However, it appears that McDaniels is not one of them, as after holding out 16 players last week, he repeated again this week that with the regular season coming up, he would rather keep the regulars out of harm’s way as much as possible.

To that end, he may actually be more concerned with keeping the fans happy by giving rookie Tim Tebow some extended playing time after he missed the Denver preseason home opener last week with bruised ribs.

While you normally would not look to play road favorites in preseason, the fact that this line is less than a field goal and the apparent intentions of the two coaches makes Pittsburgh quite desirable here.

NFL Betting Online: It’ll be a Lone Star State showdown at Reliant Stadium on Friday night, as the Cowboys and Texans meet in a rematch of the first game in Houston’s franchise history.

The visitors have some real problems offensively three games into the preseason. The extra week of preparation with the Hall of Fame Game against the Cincinnati Bengals really hasn’t helped, as the Boys are playing atrocious offensively. The team only has two TDs all preseason, one from Jon Kitna and with the other coming from QB Tony Romo.

The quarterback situation has been resolved in “Big D,” as Matt Nichols was released. That means that Stephen McGee has nailed down the third QB slot on the roster. Look for more action out of Romo and Kitna this week, as this is their final preparation for the regular season opener in two weeks. Romo has only gone 13-of-28 for 141 yards with a score and a pick so far in three exhibitions.

The key to a 2-1 SU and ATS mark has been the defense, which has held all three foes to 17 points or less. The starting ‘D’ didn’t give up its first points until last week, when the San Diego Chargers finally found pay dirt against the unit. Dallas is only surrendering 263.3 yards and 12.7 points per game during the exhibition season.

Houston should provide a great test to that ‘D’, though. There is no shame in scoring 36 points in two preseason games in spite of the fact that the Texans sport a 0-2 record both SU and ATS for their efforts.

Matt Schaub is going to lead last year’s top ranked passing attack into action this week. He has gone 13-of-16 for 195 yards with a score so far in limited action. Expect to see Schaub and the starters at least for a quarter and a half and potentially through the entire first half on Friday night.

Save for the play of Mario Williams, the defense has been nothing to write home about for Houston thus far. The former No. 1 overall draft choice has had two of the team’s three sacks on the preseason.

The rest of the ‘D’ has had plenty of holes however – Allowing 207.5 passing yards (19th) and 133.0 rushing yards (28th) per game is inexcusable, and it has led the Texans to one of the worst scoring defenses in the NFL in the preseason (28.5 PPG).

The other interesting battle to watch on this team is the kicking duel. Long time kicker Kris Brown is being pushed by Neil Rackers, but neither has missed a kick on the preseason.

Arian Foster is expected to start for the second straight game at running back, as Steve Slaton still finds himself in the doghouse after fumbling in the preseason opener at Arizona.

The home team has won all five of these in-state rivals’ preseason battles, but the Texans stand just 1-4-1 ATS their L/6 exhibition home tussles.

Philip Rivers has completed a high percentage of his passes in the regular season (71.4%), but he really hasn’t gotten much of a chance to show his stuff with his best receivers. Vincent Jackson is still holding out, while Antonio Gates only has a pair of catches.

The rushing game has been the real star of the show. Ryan Mathews, Michael Tolbert, and Marcus Mason have done a great job giving a rest to Darren Sproles, who is getting ready for the regular season. Those three have combined to carry the ball 54 times for 177 yards and two TDs. Mathews, the team’s projected starter, should get a bunch of carries in this one and will be looking for his first professional TD.

On the other side of the pigskin, the Saints improved to 1-1 both SU and ATS by thumping the Houston Texans 38-20 last Saturday night here at the Superdome.

The victory moved New Orleans up to 149.0 rushing yards and 31.0 points per game, both marks of which are amongst the tops in the league in the preseason.

The rushing attack has been on display because Drew Brees really hasn’t been. Brees has only thrown 23 passes in the preseason, completing 14 for 91 yards, the lowest amount of the three quarterbacks on the team. Expect to see more from Brees on Saturday night.

Instead, the combination of Christopher Ivy, Reggie Bush, PJ Hill, and Pierre Thomas has proven that the black and gold have a fantastic stable of running backs to choose from this year. All four have rushed for at least 50 yards, and they have combined to score three times on the ground.

Along with Manning not being at the top of his game throughout the first two weeks of action (16/21 for 182 yards 2/1 TD/INT ratio), the defense has been flat out awful allowing opponents to gain an average of 351 YPG. The rush defense allowed the Bills to chew up 144 yards last week; 55 of those came from RB C.J. Spiller who also had a 31-yard TD scamper.

Indianapolis has become synonymous with being a very poor preseason betting investment as they’re now a pathetic 2-9 SU & 3-8 ATS dating back to the 2008 season.

The Packers first team offense almost made it look unfair against the Seattle Seahawks in last Saturday night’s contest at Quest Field. Head Coach Pete Carroll’s squad failed to get much of any pressure on Aaron Rodgers, and the 1st time Pro Bowler made them pay dearly for it.

Rolling out of the pocket throughout his first quarter of work, Rodgers ended up completing eight of his 11 passes for 126 yards and a pair of TD passes. The offenses execution and success had the former Cal product giddy as he confidently proclaimed after the game, “We’re tough to stop,” Rodgers said. “We have a lot of playmakers.”

Seattle did put 24 points on the board throughout the game, but NFL bettors should take the stop unit’s performance with a grain of salt – The Packers had seven starters inactive – six on defense. Aside from injuries to Clay Matthews, Al Harris, Atari Bigby and Nick Barnett, among others, Green Bay rested veterans Charles Woodson and Donald Driver.

Green Bay is now 8-10 SU & 9-9 ATS under the Mike McCarthy regime heading into Week 3’s dress rehearsal with Indianapolis.

This figures to be a high scoring contest with the ‘over’ 6-2 ATS the L/8 times the Packers partook in a home exhibition battle. The Colts might also have their best shot of picking up a preseason SU & ATS victory considering they’re 2-0 SU & ATS vs. Green Bay in the preseason.

The Rams picked up the franchise’s first road victory of the Sam Bradford era against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 preseason betting action. The game started off exactly like it did last week at home against the Minnesota Vikings by scoring first, only this time, the Rams added on and put points on the board when it mattered most in the fourth quarter.

Though Coach Steve Spagnuolo’s squad picked up the outright win and NFL pointspread cover, he couldn’t have come away happy with the franchise’s top draft pick.

For the second straight game, Sam Bradford was shaky at best completing just 6-of-14 overall passes for a paltry 24 yards. On the bright side, the rookie wasn’t sacked once after getting dropped four times by the Vikings last week.

The offense as a whole was pretty awful as well. After gaining a total of just 150 yards at home last week, they were once again held under the 200-yard threshold with 172 total yards vs. the Browns. The unit attained just 12 first downs, went 1-of-4 in the red zone, and converted only 31 percent of its third down tries. Certainly numbers Rams fans or betting backers will not be confident in heading into the regular season.

The Rams just look to be a complete and utter mess on the offensive side of the ball right now, and the fact that projected starter A.J. Feeley is now hurt with a thumb injury will only make it worse with a lack of repetition heading into the season opener at home against Arizona.

On an entirely different spectrum, the New England Patriots offense looks to be locked in and ready for the regular season to begin!

Head Coach Bill Belichick had to love what he saw from his starting offensive unit last week in Atlanta, as Tom Brady and company simply carved through the Falcons defense with relative ease to the tune of two TD scoring drives in three tries.

However, what really has to have Patriots fans and their betting backers tickled pink was the way in which WR Wes Welker looked in his limited amount of work. The Brady/Welker combo connected twice for a total of 20-yards with a long of 14.

“Getting out there catching balls and getting hit was good,” said Welker, who has 346 catches during the L/3 seasons but was injured in January during the regular-season finale. “It’s a step forward. I’m not sure I’m all there yet.”

Defensively, New England forced a pair of turnovers, but there is clearly still work to be done on that side of the ball as the unit allowed 17 overall first downs and a 53 percent third down conversion rate.

St. Louis is now 4-2 SU & ATS in the exhibition season under the new regime, and it’s covered five of the L/6 preseason battles with the Patriots.

The Patriots already snuck past the New Orleans Saints at home this preseason (27-24), but stand just 2-3 SU & ATS in their own house the L/3 seasons. Belichick sports a career 34-24-4 ATS record in the exhibition season.

In all, the Eagles offense racked up just short of 500 combined yards of offense and moved the chains 28 times. Where they faltered was in the touchdown department as the offense had to settle for way too many field goals; luckily they possess one of the best in the business as David Akers converted all five of his attempts.

The first team defense had no problems containing the Jaguars vanilla offense, but once the reserves came in, Jacksonville flourished rattling off 27 points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter.

Northwestern product Mike Kafka rallied the team to victory in the final 15 minutes of play to allow the Eagles to pull out the 28-27 victory. By failing to cover the three-point closing NFL odds, Philly is now a bankroll depleting 19-26 ATS in the preseason with Head Coach Andy Reid calling the shots.

The Bengals put forth a miserable performance in the Hall of Fame game against the Dallas Cowboys managing only a single score in the 16-7 SU & ATS defeat. Just a week later, Head Coach Marvin Lewis’ squad looked to be a completely different team against the Denver Broncos.

Maybe it was because they were at home or the fact that last week’s loss left a lasting impression, but Cincy really gave football bettors a glimpse of what’s to come throughout the regular season. QB Carson Palmer was solid if not brilliant completing 12 of his 15 passes for 105 yards while leading the Bengals to a pair of scoring drives.

The RB corps had a huge night as Cedric Benson, Bernard Scott, James Johnson, and Cedric Peerman combined to rush for 168 yards and two TDs. Cincy’s passing attack was formidable as well collecting 20 receptions for 218 overall yards.

Though the Broncos passed for 251 yards with starter Kyle Orton collecting 84 of those yards with a pair of scores, the rush defense was magnificent allowing a grand total of 36 yards on 15 carries.

With the win, Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis stands 15-15 SU & 16-14 ATS throughout his tenure in Cincinnati.
