Football Betting – Southern Mississippi vs. South Carolina

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

The opening night of college football betting includes this SEC vs. C-USA matchup when South Carolina hosts Southern Miss. You can catch all the action from Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, South Carolina on ESPN on Thursday night, September 2 at 7:30 ET.

NCAAF Betting Online: Opening night of the 2010 college football season includes this interesting battle between a middle of the road team from the best conference in the country in the South Carolina Gamecocks against one of the better teams from a lesser conference in the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker.com for this contest is South Carolina -14 at home, with the betting total set at 47.

It is hard to believe that Steve Spurrier is entering his sixth year as the South Carolina coach, and the most wins they have had in any year during his tenure is eight on just one occasion. Last year was another disappointing one, as the Gamecocks finished at 7-6 including a bad 20-7 loss to Connecticut in the Papajohns.com Bowl.

The problem for South Carolina last year was that the offense produced just 20.6 points per game, ranking 102nd out of 120 FBS schools. They were actually not terrible moving the ball, averaging 347.4 total yards per contest, but they had trouble turning those yards into points.

This does have the potential to be an excellent offense, but it all starts with quarterback Stephen Garcia, who threw for over 2800 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. However, Coach Spurrier took the unusual step of challenging Garcia’s commitment to football through the press this summer, which is always a disconcerting sign.

Garcia has had issues with both Spurrier and the local police, but if he could keep his head, he has the support of his three top receivers returning, a talented trio of running backs, and a much-improved offensive line. Given his history and the way Spurrier has handled his situation, it may be a very big if however.

The Gamecocks were strong defensively in 2009, ranking 13th in the nation in scoring defense at just 17.1 points per game and 15th in total defense at 300.7 total yards per game. This is a veteran group that just may be one of the best defenses in the entire country.

Southern Mississippi was also 7-6 last season, and their year ended with a loss to Middle Tennessee State in the New Orleans Bowl. However, this may end up being the best Golden Eagles team since Larry Fedora took over as coach two years ago; due to a nice combination of returning starters and great recruits.

On offense, Southern Miss returns a solid third year quarterback in Austin Davis and quite possibly the best receiver in all of Conference USA in DeAndre Brown. On defense, USM returns nine starters and could easily have the best defense in a defensively challenged conference, and that should be a big advantage for them.

Yes, this is the SEC vs. Conference USA, but given the question surrounding the South Carolina quarterback position and the expected improvement of Southern Miss, this two-touchdown spread looks like a big overlay.

Will the old ball coach finally turn the Gamecocks around or will an improved Southern Miss team hang inside this big number? You can now do your football betting with Triple Double, the easiest way to do your mobile betting with Bookmaker Sportsbook.

Bet on Football – Boise State Broncos hope to buck Virginia Tech Hokies en route to perfect year

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

You can bet on football on Labor Day, as two national title hopefuls square off when Boise State takes on Virginia Tech. This marquee matchup of the week from FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland will be televised nationally on ESPN on Monday night, September 6, at 8:00 ET.

NCAAF Betting Online: The Boise State Broncos finished up a perfect 13-0 last season, including a victory over fellow unbeaten TCU in the Fiesta Bowl. Their biggest obstacle to another undefeated season may be this opening week matchup with the Virginia Tech Hokies.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker.com for this contest is Boise State -3 on this neutral field that is actually much closer to Blacksburg than it is to Boise, with the betting total set at 50.

This will be the last year for Boise State in the WAC, as they will be joining TCU in the Mountain West next year, and the fact that they have the most returning starters in the country has the Broncos thinking not only about another perfect season, but also about winning the BCS Championship!

And if they win this game and then do go undefeated, it would be extremely difficult to keep them out of the title game despite their “minor” conference status. But first thing’s first, as Virginia Tech is an excellent football team in its own right, so Boise cannot afford to look ahead here.

That said; what is there not to like about the Broncos? They finished tied with the Houston Cougars for most points scored last year at a whopping 42.2 points per game, and they excelled in every phase, averaging an outstanding 5.1 yards per rush and an excellent 8.1 yards per pass attempt.

Best of all, they are returning 10 starters from that unit! Besides that, Boise State also has great depth at the skill positions, as their third leading receiver last year should again be the leading receiver off the bench, and every single running back that gained at least one yard also returns! It would be an upset of huge proportions if this team does not average over 40 points again.

Then, there is a defense that also returns 10 starters, and figures to improve on the already low 17.1 points per game they allowed last season. Is there anyone that doubts this is a legitimate BCS Buster?

Contrary to popular belief, Boise State is not the only team here with national title hopes. If the Hokies win this game, they then have a soft non-conference schedule afterwards and should run the table until a tough three game stretch in November. Ironically though, the Hokies will probably lose this game for a reason you would not expect: Their defense!

Virginia Tech has always had great defenses under Frank Beamer, and last year was no exception as they finished ninth in the country in scoring defense, allowing only 15.6 points per game. However, they return only five starters from that stop unit, and there lies the key to this contest.

While there is little doubt the Hokies defense will develop into another formidable version per usual, playing their first game together vs. this Broncos offense simply seems like too much to overcome. Both Boise State and the ‘over’ merit long hard looks here.

Do you think that Boise State will go undefeated again, or will their unbeaten dreams be slashed right away by a very good Virginia Tech team playing much closer to home? If you want to back up your opinion with cold hard cash, you can now bet on football using Triple Double, the new mobile platform from Bookmaker Sportsbook.
A couple of North Carolina players allegedly went down to South Beach on a trip paid for by an agent, while some others have been accused of having their term papers written for them.

As a result, early indications are that defensive tackle Marvin Austin, wide receiver Greg Little, linebackers Bruce Carter and Quan Sturdivant, cornerback Kendric Burney, and safety Deunta Williams will miss at least this first game of the season and in most cases probably more; some others may sit out as the investigations continue.

North Carolina was originally a popular darkhorse pick to compete for the National Championship, as some pro scouts speculated that the Tar Heels would have as many as five players drafted in the first round of the 2011 draft. Well, all of that optimism has probably gone out the window now.

Two of those projected first rounders were Austin and Little and each player was probably the most important player for this team on his side of the ball.

Little led the Heels in receptions (62) and receiving yards (724) last season while also finishing second in total touchdowns (6) and third in rushing yards! Remember that the Heels finished 108th in the country out of 120 FBS schools in total offense at just 307.8 yards per game even with Little doing everything except selling tickets.

Without him, the defense at full capacity would have had a tough enough time carrying this team. Well, we may never know because besides the obvious depth UNC lost on defense, losing Austin is just as crippling as losing Little, as the former is an elite lineman that would have made the North Carolina defense one of the best in the country vs. the run.

Now the Tigers of LSU are not world-beaters this season, especially on the offensive end. Their defense actually looks solid, with an experienced front seven and a very young but very athletic secondary. But their offense held them back last year and probably will again in 2010.

Quarterback Jared Jefferson simply did not look like he was ready to play at this level last season, and he has been terrible in the spring. The best part of he LSU offense looks to be the receiving corps, but the development of that unit is being stunted by not having an adequate quarterback to get them the ball. Besides that, the offensive line returns only two starters, and the two starters had forgettable years in 2009.

In regards to this week though, none of this may matter if North Carolina cannot field a competitive team. For all of their problems, LSU may get the call here up to -7, provided none of the UNC suspensions are lifted before game time.

So will LSU destroy a depleted North Carolina roster or will the Tar Heels be inspired to play a bit over their head here? Back up your opinion using Triple Double, the new mobile platform from Bookmaker Sportsbook. Triple Double is your newest source for football lines and it fills all of your mobile betting needs when on the move.

CFB Odds – Texas Longhorns visits Rice Owls in opening Lone Star State battle.

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

The Texas Longhorns went to the BCS Championship Game last year, and even with quarterback Colt McCoy gone, the Longhorns should be way too much for Rice to handle in this CFB odds season opener. You can catch this in-state battle on ESPN Saturday, September 4, from Rice Stadium in Houston. Kick-off is at 3:30 ET.

NCAAF Betting Online: The Texas Longhorns begin life without Colt McCoy this week, but this team remains loaded on both sides of the ball, and facing an outclassed Rice Owls team in the opener certainly doesn’t hurt either.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker Sportsbook for this contest is Texas -29 on the road, with the betting total set at 61.

With McCoy at the helm, the Longhorns finished 22nd in the country in passing offense last year at 273.6 passing yards per game, and they finished third in scoring offense with a whopping 39.3 points per contest. Add in the fact that they were also third in the country in total defense (251.9 yards) and 12th in scoring defense (16.7) and their run to the BCS Championship Game was not surprising.

McCoy is now gone, but his replacement at quarterback, Garrett Gilbert, was ranked second in his recruiting class and it was Gilbert that led a comeback vs. Alabama that saw the Horns cut the deficit to three at 24-21 in the fourth quarter before some late Alabama scores off turnovers resulted in the deceptive 37-21 final score.

Gilbert also has a lot of returning talent in the passing game, even with Jordan Shipley gone, as seniors James Kirkendoll (48 catches, 461 yards, 6 touchdowns) John Chiles (34 catches, 319 yards, 3 touchdowns) and junior Malcolm Williams (39 catches, 550 yards, 2 touchdowns) are all immensely talented.

The defense may not miss a beat this season, even with four starters from last year now in the NFL. The seven returners are all upperclassmen and the four vacated spots will all be filled by blue-chip recruits, as recruiting is a strong suit for Texas Coach Mack Brown.

As for Rice, it is difficult to believe that they were a bowl team just two short years ago, as they went from 10-3 in 2008 to 2-10 last year, the biggest drop-off in the entire NCAA. Moreover, they didn’t merely lose their games last year, but the Owls lost them by an average of 25 points!

Rice averaged only 18.2 points per game, and they ranked 111th out of 120 FBS schools in total offense, at just 304.6 yards per game. They averaged a pathetic 4.3 yards per rush and 5.2 yards per pass attempt while watching their point production drop by 22.1 points compared to 2008, when they averaged 41.3 points!

As for the defense, well, what defense? The Owls allowed the most points in the country last year at a ridiculous 43.1 points per game, and they ranked 117th (or fourth to last) in total defense, surrendering 464.0 yards per contest. Now the front seven is much more experienced this year, so they may get more pressure on quarterbacks, but the Owls return exactly zero interceptions from the secondary,

There is no way anyone in their proper state of mind could put any real money on Rice here, but this spread and total are both so big that passing on both is probably the best option.

Will Texas begin life without the departed Colt McCoy on a positive note, or will his absence allow Rice to hang within four touchdowns?
CFB Spreads – Navy Midshipmen to sail past young Maryland Terrapins in Baltimore on Labor Day

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

One of the most intriguing CFB spreads of the opening college football weekend is Navy being favored by only seven points vs. a Maryland club that went 2-10 last season and whose only returning starter on the defensive line is a sophomore. This game from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland will be televised nationally on ESPN on Labor Day Monday, September 6, at 4:00 ET.

NCAAF Betting Online: The Navy Midshipmen should again have one of the most potent running games in the country, and it does not seem like an inexperienced Maryland Terrapins defensive line can do anything to stop them here.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker Sportsbook for this contest is Navy -7 on this neutral field, with the betting total set at 48½.

Navy went 9-4 during the regular season last year, and then followed that up with a surprisingly easy 35-13 romp over Missouri as 8½-point underdogs in the Texas Bowl. Remarkably, that marked the seventh consecutive bowl appearance for the Naval Academy.

This program turned around when Paul Johnson brought in his option offense, and while Johnson has since moved on to Georgia Tech, his offense is still alive and well in Annapolis. Navy ranked fourth in the nation in rushing offense with a robust 280.5 rushing yards per game last season, trailing only another service academy in Air Force, Johnson’s new team in Georgia Tech, and Nevada.

Not much figures to change this season, as the offensive line is good and experienced, Sure, they are all one-dimensional run blockers, but that suit’s Navy’s needs just fine. Actually, one small change is that quarterback Ricky Dobbs is considered to be the best pure QB the Midshipmen have had during their seven-year bowl run, so perhaps they will sprinkle in more pass plays than usual this year.

Now Navy also played good defense last year, allowing 18.4 points per game. However, the defense only returns six starters including just one linebacker, so run defense may become an issue. On a positive note, they do return five seniors so perhaps there will not be that much slippage overall.

Now Maryland had a very forgettable year last season, going 2-10 with one of the wins coming in overtime at home vs. an FCS school in James Madison. The offense was mediocre at best for most of the year, averaging 21.3 points per game, and they were unable to establish the run at all, averaging just 3.1 yard per carry.

However, the running backs are not short on ability, but rather, the problem is a bad offensive line that is more inexperienced this year than last with only one senior starter returning, and that is Paul Pinegar, who is trying a brand new position this year at center.

If you think that is bad, consider that the defensive line also returns just one starter, and that he is a sophomore! So what we have here is basically a brand new defensive line facing a unique and finely run wishbone attack in its first game ever as a group at the college level. Good luck with that!

On paper, this looks like one of the easier selections of opening weekend as Navy should be able to do whatever it wants on offense and go on to win this game by double-digits.

If you think the potent Navy running game will shred the young Maryland defensive line, you can now get your CFB Spreads on Triple Double, the new mobile platform from Bookmaker Sportsbook. Triple Double makes betting on the go easy when you are with fiends or family.

Football Odds – Arizona Wildcats tries to bring down Toledo Rockets in opener

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

Arizona may be a contender for the Pac-10 title, but a potent Toledo offense makes for a tough opener for a Wildcat defense in transition. This intersectional battle will be nationally televised on ESPN on Friday, September 3. Kick-off from the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio is at 8:00 ET.

NCAAF Betting Online: The Arizona Wildcats are contenders to win the Pac-10 this season, but that does not mean they will have a cakewalk when they pay a visit to the Toledo Rockets out of the MAC on Friday.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker.com for this contest is Arizona -14½ on the road, with the betting ‘total’ set at 60.

It was not that long ago that Arizona got by with a dominating defense and an efficient, mistake-free offense. My, how times have changed! It is now the offense that can score points on anyone, and it sometimes has to because the defense is now the side of the ball that has some serious flaws.

The Wildcats went 8-5 last season, but their year ended on a downer when they were annihilated 33-0 by Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl. Still, the Nebraska defense did that to a lot of teams last year.

Arizona scored at least 33 points in six of its 12 regular season games, and they topped 40 points three times. The offense perked up when Nick Foles took over at quarterback in Week 4, and he went on to throw for nearly 2500 yards and 19 touchdowns in just nine regular season games.

Foles is back and is now considered to be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference. The offense also features a deep receiving corps led by the top three returning receivers from last year, an experienced offensive line that returns four starters, and a strong stable of running backs led by Nic Grigsby, a former 1000 yard rusher that was slowed by injuries. Now said to be 100 percent healthy, he is once again the go-to back.

While the offense looks potent, the defense lost a whole bunch from last year. This unit had four Second Team all Pac-10 players, and all four are now gone, as well as all three starting linebackers! With a whole new linebacking corps and an undersized defensive line, teams should now be able to run on Arizona like never before.

This makes Toledo a very dangerous home underdog in this spot, especially catching better then two touchdowns. The Rockets should have one of the better offenses in the MAC this season, and this unit can take advantage of Arizona’s green defense.

Last year’s starting QB, Aaron Opelt, was injured but that actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise allowing this year’s starter, Austin Dantin, to got valuable playing time as a true freshman while filling in. Dentin has a strong set of receivers returning, including Eric Page, who last year led all freshmen in the entire country in receptions (82) and receiving yards (1159).

Most importantly, Toledo has an excellent offensive line that also returns four starters, and that should result in a solid running game, led by another former 1000 yard rusher in Morgan Williams, who could return to that level as the featured back behind this line.

This should be a high scoring affair, but while this posted total is too high, the Rockets should score enough points at home for the cover.

Will the fact that Arizona is a Pac-10 school be enough for them to smash this little MAC opponent, or will Toledo score their usual boatload of points even with the step up in class?
Bet on CFB – Bowl ineligible USC begins sanctioned season in Hawaii

Written by North Shore Sports, INC

Bet on CFB right now when the USC Trojans open the season on the islands of Hawaii knowing they cannot participate in a bowl in 2010. Will this affect them subconsciously? You can watch this contest live from Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii on ESPN on Thursday night, September 2nd at 11:00 ET to find out.

NCAAF Betting Online: Well, the USC Trojans now know that they won’t go bowling this year, but talent-wise, they will not really feel the pain of their scholarship sanctions just yet. This is still an excellent team on both sides of the ball, and as long as the players do not just go through the motions, they should handle the Hawaii Rainbows with ease on opening week.

The current betting spread at Bookmaker Sportsbook for this contest is USC -21 on the road, with the betting ‘total’ set at 53.

Before the NCAA dropped the hammer on the Trojans and before Coach Pete Carroll bolted for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, USC had a disappointing season by their standards last year, going 9-4 including blowout losses at Oregon and at home vs. Stanford.

The team had slippage on both sides of the ball compared to the powerhouse teams that cruised through the Pac-10 and routinely competed for national titles in prior seasons. The Trojans ranked just 55th in the country in total offense at 389.1 yards per game while averaging a rather ordinary 26.5 points, while the stop unit ranked 40th in total defense, surrendering 340.5 yards per game.

There is reason for optimism this year though, the sanctions notwithstanding. Remember that Matt Barkley started at quarterback as a true freshman in ‘09, and he should only benefit from that experience. Also, while Lane Kiffin was a controversial hire to replace Carroll, he did turn QB Jonathan Crompton into an NFL draft pick while at Tennessee, so Barkley should improve with Kiffin as his tutor.

The receivers are young after senior Ronald Johnson, but all are athletic and all are by-products of Carroll’s great recruiting when he was on board. They also boast a top notch crew of running backs keyed by senior Allen Bradford. The defense could be impossible to run on, as the Trojans have one of the stingiest front sevens in the country.

The Rainbows have not enjoyed life since June Jones left, as they finished 6-7 and didn’t qualify for their own bowl last year. The biggest decline came on the offensive side of the ball, where they scored almost three touchdowns per game less than the 2008 Sugar Bowl team did under Colt Brennan.

They now have major issues on the offensive line with just one returning starter, and they have a young quarterback in Brian Moniz; the prospects once again look dim for the offense this season.

The defense returns seven starters, but remember that this unit allowed 201.8 rushing yards per game last year, so that may not be a good thing. Sure, Hawaii actually ranked 33rd in the country in pass defense at 201 2 yards per contest, but that was only because teams were running at will on them, diminishing the need to pass.

This looks like a blowout on paper, but it is hard to lay this many points on the road in USC’s first game after getting penalized. The ‘under’ looks to be more viable, as the USC defense should dominate this game from start to finish.

Whether you think USC’s talent advantage is enough for a romp here or if you think they will be disinterested and allow the Warriors to slide under the hefty number, Triple Double is your easy-to-use source for betting on the go.

Georgia Tech facing Iowa may be the least attractive matchup of the BCS games, but the Orange Bowl could end up being the most intriguing one. In what appears to be a classic case of a high-powered offense versus a stingy defense, the No.9 Yellow Jackets will try to run their way past the No.10 Hawkeyes when the teams meet Jan. 5 in Miami.

8:00 PM ET, January 5, 2010
Land Shark Stadium , MIAMI, FL
FOX

No.10 Iowa Hawkeyes finished their season with a great record of 10-2 and on 2nd place at Big Ten Conference. They expect a lot of good things for this game since they got back QB Ricky Stanzi and top RB Adam Robinson (775 yards) from injuries and that should help Iowa put points on the board in case this game becomes a high-scoring affair. Stanzi led the Hawkeyes to a 9-0 start before leaving a 17-10 loss to Northwestern on Nov. 7 with an ankle injury that required surgery. Other players involved in offense are QB James Vandenberg, RB Brandon Wegher, WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos and WR Marvin McNutt. This is all Iowa has to offer and I doubt it will make a huge difference on the field but I am sure they will try.

No.9 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets went 11-2 and beat Clemson 39-34 in the ACC championship game to win the crown for the first time since sharing it with Florida State in 1998. It was the Yellow Jackets’ first outright ACC title since 1990.This is only coach Paul Johnson’s second season on board and the team is reacting positively to his coaching abilities. Johnson’s spread option offense has been the key to Georgia Tech’s success and we can expect the same thing on this game, it could be a very high scoring game. The Yellow Jackets are 11th in the Football Bowl Subdivision in total offense and will be facing a Hawkeyes squad that is 11th in total defense. Georgia Tech averages 442.7 yards with 307.2 of them coming on the ground, good for second in the nation. Iowa gives up 286.7 total yards per game, 122.0 rushing. Also The Yellow Jackets are 11th in the country with 35.3 points per game while the Hawkeyes are 10th in scoring defense, allowing 15.5 a contest. RB Jonathan Dwyer and QB Josh Nesbitt will be the key pieces in Georgia Tech’s offensive strategy. Other players involved in offense are WR Demaryius Thomas and RB Embry Peeples. Basically all Georgia Tech has to do is to attack and try to weaken Iowa’s tough defense.

GAME ODDS

IOWA 50
GEORGIA TECH -3

THE BOWL WILL BE A HIGH SCORING ONE, GEORGIA TECH WON’T HAVE MERCY AND THEY WILL TRY TO SCORE IN EVERY POSSESSION. IOWA WILL NEED A LOT OF EFFORT ON DEFENSE AND THEY NEED TO STOP THE TRAIN THAT IS COMING TOWARDS THEM. MY PICK WILL BE GEORGIA TECH YELLOW JACKETS -3.

Keeping Texas Tech’s high-powered offense in check figured to be hard enough for Michigan State. Doing it without 11 suspended players makes that assignment an even greater challenge for the Spartans. Michigan State could be hard-pressed to avoid a fourth straight postseason loss when it faces the Red Raiders and the nation’s second-ranked pass offense in the Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.

9:00 PM ET, January 2, 2010
Alamodome , SAN ANTONIO, TX
ESPN

Michigan State Spartans with an overall record of 6-6 have been struggling all year long with the pass defense. They ranked 103rd in that category and allowed 29 touchdown passes while getting five interceptions — tied for the fewest in the nation and those are awful numbers against a passing team like the Red Raiders. Slowing down the Red Raiders with a full complement of players was already difficult, but the Spartans will be undermanned in this matchup after Dantonio suspended 11 players for their roles in a dormitory brawl Nov. 22. RB Glenn Winston and DB Roderick Jenrette were dismissed from the team while starters Chris L. Rucker — the team’s top cover corner — WR B.J. Cunningham and WR Mark Dell are among those suspended. QB Kirk Cousins will have a tough job now that his team is partially suspended, it will be incredibly hard to make it happen now more than ever. Michigan State biggest asset will be junior LB Greg Jones, the Big Ten defensive player of the year who ranked third in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 141 tackles — the eighth-best single-season total in school history. He also had nine of the team’s 34 sacks. The point here for Michigan State will be to try and hold the team together (what’s left of it) and try to stop Texas Tech passing game. Other players involved in offense are QB Keith Nichol, RB Larry Caper, RB Edwin Baker, WR Blair White and WR B.J. Cunningham.

Texas Tech Red Raiders finished their regular season with an overall record of 8-4 and they were 3rd on the Big 12 South. After sharing the Big 12 title last season and narrowly missing out on qualifying for the BCS, Texas Tech managed another successful campaign under coach Mike Leach in what figured to be a rebuilding year. A victory in San Antonio would give the Red Raiders six bowls wins in the Leach era and three straight seasons of at least nine victories. Strong quarterback play has never been an issue for the Red Raiders under Leach, but injuries this season to QB Taylor Potts and QB Steven Sheffield forced him to use three signal-callers. Potts began the season in the No. 1 role and has won five of nine starts. He looked particularly strong late in the season, completing 66 of 102 passes for 657 yards with four touchdowns in the final two games — wins over Oklahoma and Baylor. Potts led the Big 12 with 306.8 passing yards per game. Potts has a multitude of targets at his disposal as the Red Raiders had nine players with at least 20 receptions. Freshman WR Alexander Torres led the team with 65 catches and 791 yards, and was second with six touchdowns. RB Baron Batch is the top threat out of the backfield, leading Texas Tech with 784 rushing yards and 13 total touchdowns — 12 on the ground. While the Red Raiders’ offense garners most of the notoriety, the defense exceeded expectations. Led by senior DE Brandon Sharpe, who recorded a school-record 15 sacks to rank second nationally, Texas Tech allowed a respectable 348.8 yards and 21.8 points per game. Other players involved in offense are RB Eric Stephens and WR Detron Lewis.

GAME ODDS

MICHIGAN STATE 60
TEXAS TECH -8

A TEAM LIKE MICHIGAN WITH SO MANY SUSPENDED PLAYERS SHOULDN’T HAVE QUALIFIED FOR A BOWL BUT MAKING A SUPERHUMAN EFFORT THEY DID SO THEY ACTUALLY DESERVE TO BE HERE. TEXAS TECH NATURALLY WITH A BETTER RECORD AND A FULL ROSTER APPEARS TO BE SUPERIOR BOTH IN OFFENSE AND DEFENSE SO I EXPECT A LONG NIGHT FOR THE SPARTANS. MY PICK WILL BE TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS -8.

East Carolina and Arkansas have different reasons to view a Liberty Bowl triumph as further validation of successful seasons. These teams meet Jan. 2 in Memphis, Tenn., with the Pirates attempting to avoid a second straight loss in this bowl and the Razorbacks trying to add another key foundation block under Bobby Petrino.

5:30 PM ET, January 2, 2010
Liberty Bowl , MEMPHIS, TN
ESPN

Arkansas Razorbacks ended their regular season with an overall record of 7-5, not bad for a tough division like SEC West where they finished in 4th place. This will be their first bowl appearance under second-year coach Bobby Petrino, who appears to be far better suited as a college coach than in the NFL. Petrino returned to the college ranks after a disastrous 13-game stint with the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 — a job he got on the strength of a stellar 41-9 record in four years at Louisville. This season, the Razorbacks finished atop the SEC in scoring (37.3 points per game), passing (303.3 yards per game) and passing touchdowns (31). Petrino is slowly changing this team, but the was able to shaped a great player like QB Ryan Mallett and make him a high level QB. Mallett who was benched last season threw for 3,422 yards and 29 touchdowns with seven interceptions and was a Manning Award finalist as one of the top signal-callers in the country. He also broke or tied 16 school records, and Arkansas set a school mark with 3,640 passing yards. The Razorbacks strategy will be simple, they scored at least 30 points in nine of their 12 games and averaged 44.8 points and 471.4 yards in the final five. They have a balanced attack, as four players have rushed for at least 300 yards and five receivers have at least 300, that is all offense and they will try to run the Pirates over with everything they have got. Other players involved in offense are QB Tyler Wilson, RB Michael Smith, RB Broderick Green, WR Greg Childs and WR Jarius Wright.

East Carolina Pirates finished their season with an overall record of 9-4 in the C-USA East where they were 1st place. They return to the Liberty Bowl for the second consecutive season after defeating then-No.18 Houston 38-32 in the Conference USA Championship game. The Pirates are the first team to win consecutive titles since the conference switched to a two-division format in 2005. The Liberty Bowl gives East Carolina the chance to record its first 10-win season since 1991. The Pirates had the same opportunity last year, only to lose 25-19 to Kentucky after blowing a 16-3 halftime lead. QB Patrick Pinkney will be one of the few players to watched from East Carolina. He played well for them in last year’s bowl, completing 18 of 36 passes for 296 yards and one touchdown. He’ll be aided by another great player, junior WR Dwayne Harris, the MVP of the Conference USA title game and the conference’s special teams player of the year. Other players involved in offense will be QB Josh Jordan, RB Dominique Lindsay, RB Brandon Jackson and WR Darryl Freeney. The Pirates strategy will be simple enough, defend at all costs and score in the few chances they get, they will based the offense throwing so they need to defend really good since the air game is not always accurate.

GAME ODDS

ARKANSAS -7
EAST CAROLINA 63

ARKANSAS COMES TO THIS BOWL GAME FROM A TOUGHER DIVISION THAN EAST CAROLINA AND THEIR RECORD DOESN’T MEAN THAT THEY PLAYED BAD, SEC IS JUST MORE COMPETITIVE THAN THE CONFERENCE USA AND WE ALL KNOW THAT ARKANSAS HAS MORE SCORING RESOURCES THAN THE PIRATES SO IT WILL BE OFFENSE VS DEFENSE ALL THE WAY. MY PICK WILL BE ARKANSAS RAZORBACKS -7.
