Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. is considered pound for pound the best fighter in the World. Mayweather has won six world boxing championships in five different boxing weight classes; he is the former WBC welterweight champion, a title he vacated upon his retirement. Mayweather is undefeated with 40 wins including 25 by knockout and that is quite impressive for a boxer that usually only counterstrikes and waits for his opponents to open up to punish them, he is as patient and as disciplined as nooone before. His titles are: WBC Super Featherweight title, WBC Lightweight title, WBC Super Lightweight title, IBF and vacant IBO Welterweight titles, IBO, IBA and WBC Welterweight titles and WBC Super Welterweight title. His impressive career has been colorful as successful, he has fired and rehired his uncle and father as many times as his titles and he seems to have no social filter when it comes to comments on interviews. He is a cocky fighter but he knows how to box and he can back up his words at any time against pretty much anyone. The fact that the fight against Pacquiao didn’t go through left a lot of questions in the air: Who is the best fighter ever? Is this fight going to become a reality? And the answer lies on Mayweather who wants a clean fight and doesn’t trust Pacman’s methods to increase his body mass and his strenght, may be he knows something we don’t.

“Sugar” Shane Mosley born September 7, 1971 is a great boxer who has won three world titles and beaten Oscar De La Hoya twice which is something not that many people have accomplished. Mosley’s titles are: IBF Lightweight Champion, WBC Welterweight Champion, WBC Super Welterweight Champion, WBA Super Welterweight Super Champion, The Ring Junior Middleweight Champion and WBA Welterweight Super Champion. This boxer had had quite a career and his record of 46-5-1 with 39 knock outs makes him a perfect match for Mayweather. Mosley has also been mixed in scandals and he has a lo to prove to his fans and this will be the perfect chance to do so. His strategy will be to wait and see what Mayweather brings to the match and then he will probably go forward but without overexposing himself to a beatdown.

Mayweather Jr. will wait for a hole in Mosley’s defense and he will try to capitalize on it but that is exactly what Mosley will try to avoid, he will not overexpose himself and he will not leave himself to be punished.

He is also a former WBC World lightweight champion, WBC World Super featherweight Champion, IBF World Super Bantamweight Champion, WBC World Flyweight champion. He’s the first boxer in history to win 7 world titles in seven different weight classes. In addition, he is the only boxer to win the lineal championship (“the man who beat the man”) in four different weight classes. Well besides all his tittles the guy does pretty much everything, he’s also involve in politics, filmmaking and music recording so it sounds like he is quite the business man. he trains hard and his power comes from multiple combinations and basically for this fight he has trained like a real champ, taking it seriously on and off the ring. I know there are many rumours that manny couldn’t go up 7 weight classes without any extra help from any restricted substances but for me the guy looks as clean as one can be as a professional athlete, he doesn’t need the help in my opinion, he has plenty of boxing to beat just about anyone so his mayor concern will be to re-establish the trust of his fans. In my opinion the guy took some steriods because it is very hard to go up 50 pounds in muscle weight without any extra juice without losing any strenght or speed, and incrementing his overall power but some people think he’s a gifted athlete, I guess because of the lack of prove we will go with the second opinion.

Joshua Cottley born in March 16th, 1976 in Accra, Ghana gets to climb in the ring with the best of the best in Welterweight and he’s planning to make the best of the opportunity. His current record is 35-3-1 with 20 KO’s. Clottey rose to prominence by winning his first twenty fights, including 14 by knockout. His performance set him up to fight Carlos Baldomir, in a title defense by Baldomir for the WBC International Welterweight Title. Clottey lost by disqualification in a controversial fight. Clottey was winning the fight until the 10th round, where he was penalized two points for an intentional head butt. After that fiasco he rose from that embarrasing performance he won 10 straight fights culminating in an IBF Intercontinental Welterweight title. Then he got his big shot to the title against Antonio Margarito but broke his hand in the 4th round and ended up losing the fight by unanimous decision and he proved to the boxing world he is a worthy opponent. He also lost against Miguel Cotto but the fighter has never lost by KO against anyone so we might want to keep that on our minds since this fight could go all the way. The fight will be the highlight of Cottley’s career so he will try as hard as possible to knock Pacquiao who haven’t lost a fight in a while.

He will wait for the mistake and then he will use it aganist Marquez, although he is not an easy prey marquez will fight out of his weight class and that will define the outcome of this match up. Mayweather’s size and speed will determine this fight. He is naturally bigger; he’s faster, and may be one of the most intelligent fighters in the game. It’s one thing to know how to fight. It’s entirely, another to know how to fight your fight and nobody is better than Mayweather of dictating pace. My Pick:  Pacman has made his name by beating up lightweight Mexicans…What? It’s true.  Anyways, while I am not trying to take away anything he has accomplished you have to take a look at his past fights to get an idea of how this is going to go.  He used his speed and technique to wear his opponents down and then go in for the kill in the later rounds.  Very rarely does he knockout an opponent in early rounds because of the lack of power punching.  It is not a bad thing, but if he continues to move up in weight class he better figure out a finishing combo because someone the likes of Ricky Hatton is not going to be wore down easily.  Don’t get me wrong, I really like Pacman, hes fast, he has great technique, a great trainer in Freddy Roach and more importantly he is not one of these pre-madonnas that thinks the boxing world owes him one.  I’m just not sure if he has enough in the tank to hurt a solid rock like Hatton.  Some could say that Hatton is not very fast, but I think he is fast enough and there is no doubt that he hits hard enough.  I think for Hatton it is going to be a very control style fight for him, he needs to get Pacman on the retreat and not allow him to dictate the tempo or he could find himself behind in rounds for the mere fact that Pacman is dancing around him.  If Hatton can keep Manny disrupted and out of rythem then I think a few well placed hooks could buckle the knees of the Phillipino.  I think that the line at -255 is waay too high and is probably going to scare away some action and with a hard hitter like Hatton there is certainly no value in it.  At almost 2 to 1 on your money with Hatton it is much more attractive and I know what your thinking, if Hatton can’t catch him, how is he going to hit him?  As with any hand to hand combat sport it only takes one well placed shot to drop even the toughest of fighters and I think the smart money should be on Hatton…

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today began distributing food to over 135,000 people displaced by fighting in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), which has forced an estimated 250,000 people to flee their homes in recent months.

The distributions are aimed at internally displaced persons (IDPs) in six camps around Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, which has been the scene of deadly fighting between Government forces (FARDC) and the rebel National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), led by renegade general Laurent Nkunda.

While clashes are continuing in some parts of North Kivu, a recent ceasefire is reportedly stillWFP is responding as quickly as possible to deliver food to people who’ve been brutalised too many times over many years holding in Goma, which has a swelling population of between 700,000 and 1 million.

“WFP is responding as quickly as possible to deliver food to people who’ve been brutalised too many times over many years,” said Mustapha Darboe, WFP Regional Director for Southern, Eastern and Central Africa.

“Now they are suffering again. Tens of thousands have been uprooted in North Kivu and we are doing everything we can to find them and help them.”

The 10-day rations will be distributed in all camps at the same time to avoid any disturbances, as well as to ease the pressure on food supplies in Goma since the violence temporarily cut off many delivery routes.

The agency is moving food stocks to Goma from its office in Bukavu in South Kivu, and bringing in supplies from Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Assisting WFP with the relief effort is the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which will handle distributions to the estimated 65,000 IDPs who are now gathered at Kibati camp, 15 kilometres north of Goma.

The agency reported that a UN assessment mission to the Rutshuru area – the scene of much of the recent fighting – was forced to cut short its work on Tuesday when it found itself in close proximity to new clashes around Kiwanja, north of Rutshuru town.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has confirmed that three IDP camps in the area were destroyed and emptied, and is trying along with WFP and other agencies to determine what happened to the inhabitants.

“This is a dangerous and unstable environment and it’s going to be challenging to deliver food to where it is needed most. We need proper security in place to ensure everyone involved is safe and that we reach the most vulnerable,” Mr. Darboe said.

CONGO WILL NEED MORE COOPERATION !!

My Pick:  Cotto being the current champ is obviously the favorite, but at -245 its waaay too steep to jump on.  Cotto is a good fighter who got where he is today by grinding it out and protecting his suspect glass jaw(that when hit hard enough has been more wobbly than me after a half bottle of scotch), but he is going to have to be aggressive with Margarito if he wants to avoid losing the belt.  Margarito at +185 is a more enticing bet for the contentious bettor who believe that the hard hitting mexican is underrated and that his more in-your-face fighting style can find the open shots neccessary for working on Cotto’s jaw.  I like Cotto and want to see him win, but the line is too high and in this case I would take the over 9.5 rounds which is still a pricey bet at -170.  Regardless of who wins it should be a great fight!

Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito: Betting Odds and Pick

Manny Pacquiao -410 is coming off a close split decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in which he suffered a severe cut over his right eye that many feared would not be healed in time for this bout.  Pacquiao has definantly shown that he can go the distance pound for pound with anyone and his tolerance for taking punches has been tested time again from Barrera and Marquez.  Pacman will need to rely a lot on his speed to out manuever Diaz and hope to make it a tacticle fight in which he can wear him down.  His punching power may be suspect especially against an opponent who is naturally a bigger boxer.

David Diaz +260 is no slouch himself and really should get some more respect than the odds let on, he is naturally bigger and from past experiences he looks to hit harder, while not a power puncher he still carries enough to keep Pacman at bay.  If Diaz can control himself and defend against Pacquiao’s hand speed he can stun him enough to work in the combos that he will most likely need to have a chance to defend his title.

My Pick:  Both fighters need to make this a tacticle fight, Diaz needs to be calculating and in control to avoid the flurry of combos and jabs that Pacquiao will throw his way and Pacman will need to use caution to avoid catching a hard right which has been known to make him buckle.  If the fight goes the distance then Pacquiao will no doubt win based soley on the punch count, but if Daiz can hurt him early and contiue the pressure I like his chances. With the spread so high on Pacman I cannot advocate taking the favorite, chances are he will win, but one punch could change all of that so if you must beat a winner then take Diaz for a $20 fun buck bet, what I really like is the over 9.5 rounds -140, its not high enough to get over exposed and the odds are good it will come in. Take the over!

Many will remember Alfonso Gomez from the first and ultimately the best season of ESPN’s “The Contender” where he was a fan favorite and fierce competitor.  Since his appearance Gomez has been making a name for himself and at 18-3-2 with 8 KO’s hes has worked his way up the ladder to challenge Cotto 31-0 with 25 KO’s for the WCB Welterweight Title.  Its not going to be any picnic for Gomez going up against a more experienced and most would say harder hitting Cotto.  Zab Judah and Shane Mosley found out the hard way that Cotto is not to be underestimated after convincing whoopings that he put on both of them in his last 2 fights.  Regardless Gomez has the heart to make it a great fight and I doubt he will let us down.  Heres the current moneyline odds on the fight:

My Pick:  In this case its obviously foolish to take the favorite, no one is going to bet on a line that high, especially in boxing where a lucky kidney punch can end it before it gets going.  The play is Gomez +700 but not for your usual $100 bet, more like $50.  I also like the Over 9.5 rounds +135, I know Cotto hits hard but Gomez is kinda like Arturo Gatti in that you just can’t put him down, he takes a beating real good but won’t be knocked out.
