West Virginia will look to avoid putting forth its fourth straight 9-4 SU season when it takes to the gridiron in sunny Miami looking to put an end to its two-game bowl game losing streak. The Mounty’s started their 2011 campaign off amidst some ugly controversy when then head coach Bill Stewart stepped down allowing Dana Holgorsen to snag his first ever head coaching gig. His potent offenses from his days as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, Houston, and Texas Tech had the folks in Morgantown excited about the records QB Geno Smith and the offense could smash throughout this season. While the offense did improve its PPG scoring average by 10+ points, the unit was extremely one dimensional, and the inability to run the football cost them dearly on a number of occasions.
In all, the Mountaineers gained an average of 459.6 YPG (#18) with 341.8 of those yards coming via the pass (#7), while scoring an average of 34.9 PPG (#20). Unfortunately, not a single member of the running back committee was able to surpass the 800 yard plateau with Dustin Garrison’s 742 yards leading the way; WVU rushed for an average of just 117.8 YPG (#100). Clemson just so happens to excel in defending the pass (#38 at 202.9 YPG with 13 INTs) and struggle against the run (#81 at 176.5 YPG), so it would behoove the Mounty’s to look get off in the ground game to make QB Smith’s job that much easier. West Virginia was solid away from its own stadium compiling 4-1 SU & ATS marks with its lone defeat coming in a shocker at Syracuse (49-23).
Clemson’s 2010-11 campaign hardly went the way head coach Dabo Swinney and his staff would have liked with the team compiling a 6-7 SU record that concluded with a Meineke Car Care Bowl defeat to the South Florida Bulls. This had many of the belief that Swinney and his staff were all on the hot seat heading into the 2011-12 season. With nine players back from last year starting offense, CU believed it would show much improvement over last year’s mediocre at best statistics. When it was all said and done, QB Tajh Boyd, WR Sammy Watkins, and OL Phillip Price were selected for the All-ACC team; Watkins also earned Freshman of the Year honors after racking up 2,000 all-purpose yards – something that had only been done five other times in the ACC.
The defense had its fair share of playmakers as well with D-Lineman Andre Branch and Brandon Thompson making the All-ACC Defense. Unfortunately, that’s where the accolades stopped for the Tigers who gave up a healthy average of 379.4 YPG (#58) with 176.5 of those yards coming via the rush; the stop unit also gave up 26.2 PPG (#62), which equated to just over a touchdown more than a season ago.
College Football Lines Prediction – The cream of the crop in the ACC looked to be a whole heck of a lot better than the cream of the crop in the Big East this season, and with that being the case, we like Clemson to close out the year in style and hand WVU its third straight bowl defeat. Big East bowl underdogs stand just 10-14 ATS since the 2000 bowl season, and the Mountaineers check in a woeful 5-13 ATS the L/18 times they squared off against ACC opposition. Clemson might be 1-6 ATS its L/7 bowl games, but it’s also 5-1 ATS the L/6 times it played off a pointspread triumph as well as 6-2 ATS off its L/8 SU wins.

College Football Vegas Odds – Hokies and Cardinal Engage in Orange Bowl Battle
Written by North Shore Sports, Inc.
Betting on the go for the college football Vegas odds couldn’t be any easier than it is this bowl season at Bookmaker Sportsbook! The duel we are keying in on today is the Orange Bowl between the Stanford Cardinal and the Virginia Tech Hokies.
NCAAF Betting Online: The Stanford Cardinal and the Virginia Tech Hokies are ready to have at it in the Orange Bowl on Monday, January 3rd at 8:30 ET. This game from Sun Life Stadium in Miami, FL can be seen nationally on ESPN and ESPN3.com, and is certainly a bowl battle that you won’t want to miss our analysis of the college football Vegas odds here at Bookmaker Sportsbook.
Beating the college football Vegas odds is going to be a tough quest for the Cardinal in this one. The Pac-10 champs are going to be playing quite a long way from home, as they have the longest jaunt to get to their bowl destination of any team in America.
This should be a real showcase game for Andrew Luck, who is hoping to be the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft in just a few months. Luck has thrown for 3,045 yards and 28 TDs this year, and he really did pick apart the mass majority of the teams in the Pac-10. Though Stanford was clearly the second best team to the Oregon Ducks in the conference, there is no doubt that this offense is the real deal. Averaging 468.7 yards per game was good enough to rank No. 14 in the land.
If you take away that loss in Eugene, Stanford went 7-3-1 against the college football Vegas odds this year, and that can be attributed to a defense that allowed just 14.7 points per game in all other games.
There is no coach in the country that deserves more accolades this year than Head Coach Frank Beamer. Beamer convinced his team to just continue playing the season out after starting out the year at 0-2 with a miserable loss to the James Madison Dukes. Since then, the Hokies are 11-0 SU and 10-1 against the college football Vegas odds.
Don’t be surprised if this is a real showcase game for Tyrod Taylor, who is trying to make himself a legitimate draft choice in the NFL this year. Taylor was the ACC’s Player of the Year this season thanks to the fact that he led the offense to 37.8 points per game since the loss to JMU.
The college football Vegas odds in the Orange Bowl features the Cardinal favored by 3.5 points, while the ‘total’ has been set at 57. The underdogs are the way to go in this one. Virginia Tech is just too hot to be stopped, and the world is going to get a great firsthand look at the fact that the ACC should not have been underestimated this year. Luck will play well, but in the end, Taylor and the Hokies should rule the night.
