Nevada Wolf Pack with an overall record of 8-4 and 2nd place at WAC travels to Hawaii to play the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl against Southern Methodist Mustangs with an overall record of 7-5 and 2nd place at C-USA West. SMU will be playing in its first bowl since 1984. Ironically, the Mustangs may feel like they’re going up against the Pony Express when they face a Nevada rushing offense that is the best in the nation, with three 1,000-yard rushers. SMU coach June Jones is returning to the islands for the first time since leaving the University of Hawaii for SMU two years ago.

Nevada Wolf Pack is a serious team running the ball. They have three rushers with 1000+ yards each which is quite an accomplishment for a modest WAC team. RB Vai Taua with 1375 yards rushed and 10 touchdowns is the perfect example of what to expect. Also QB
Colin Kaepernick rushed for 1160 yards and scored 16 tds, impressive for a QB don’t you think? Other players like WR Brandon Wimberly and WR Tray Session will also be a part of the offense but mainly the team will go with the grown offensive system. They average 362.3 yards rushing and only 159.3 passing so the main point will be to run and run until the Mustangs fall.

Southern Methodist Mustangs were 2nd on the C-USA West and their style is pretty much passing and a few running attempts. Maybe the Mustangs are focusing on the game ahead and they need to polish the running defense since that will be all the Wolf pack brings, running game is the key for the Mustangs and they need to counter-strike by air, it will be the only alternative against Nevada. QB Bo Levi Mitchell, RB Shawnbrey McNeal, RB Z. Line, WR Emmanuel Sanders and WR Terrance Wilkerson will be the leaders on offense, they will need a lot of luck to catch a break on this one. The key to beat Nevada will be a solid running defense and a great passing strategy, that way they pressure and release a bomb.

GAME ODDS

NEVADA -15
SMU 73½

THE RUNNING GAME WILL BE ALL IN SMU’S MIND. HOW CAN YOU STOP 3 DIFFERENT PLAYERS THAT CAN EASILY BREAK YOUR DEFENSE IN 3 OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS? THERE WILL BE NO ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM SO ALL SMU CAN HOPE FOR IS TO SCORE BY AIR AND RESPOND TO NEVADA’S THREAT. MY PICK WILL BE NEVADA -15.
