Texas Longhorns are now a well rounded team. QB Colt McCoy is now playing at his full potential, he started this season super slow but the team didn’t really need him to carry them, now if they do he will step up like the great player he is. He has a quick release, locates mismatches quickly and is very accurate throwing underneath so it should come as no surprise that he excels when Texas operates out of five-wide receiver, empty backfield sets. WR Jordan Shipley and WR James Kirkendoll are McCoy’s men by air. McCoy-to-Jordan Shipley is still arguably the best pass-catch combo in the country, but Kirkendoll has 19 catches with three touchdowns in the last three games. He had eight catches for 86 yards and two scores against Kansas on Saturday night when Texas (11-0, 7-0) clinched the Big 12 South with a 51-20 win. He caught McCoy’s first and last TD passes of the night. The key next thursday will be the fact that the Aggies rank among the worst in the country in pass defense so all McCoy has to do is let the ball fly. RB Tre’ Newton and RB Cody Johnson are the best threat to control the game Texas could ask for. They will hold the ball and they will run when it’s necessary so it looks like a win-win situation for the Longhorns on the offensive line.
Texas A&M Aggies record at home is pretty impressive (5-1) but this could be their second defeat at home. The Aggies don’t have the experience or depth at cornerback to match up when the Longhorns spread the field and force the Aggies to make more tackles in space. Texas A&M Jack Von Miller, who has the initial quickness, athletic ability and closing speed to beat Texas OTs Adam Ulatoski and Kyle Hix one-on-one off the edge. It is an interesting match up between an very offensive team against a very defensive one. A&M needs a lot of help on defense if they want to keep a close score. Texas A&M gained bowl eligibility and unleashed a year’s worth of payback on Baylor in a 38-3 win. A&M coach Mike Sherman even referred to his team as “Cardiac Kids” after the Baylor win, even though the Aggies haven’t delivered fantastic finishes. Only a 35-34 loss at Colorado was decided by three points or less. The average margin in A&M’s six wins has been 27 points; in the five defeats, the average loss was 27.4 points so the question is which Texas A&M team will play, the well organized and eager Aggies or the desperate, full of mistakes Aggies, I guess time will tell. QB Jerrod Johnson, RB Cyrus Gray, RB Christine Michael and WR Howard Morrow will be helping A&M’s cause but it will be awfully hard to beat the Longhorns even if they are playing at home.
