Man did I get it wrong last week! Rutgers completely laid down like a drunk prom date and gave up that ass to the likes of UNC and Washington has no shame as they basically let Oklahoma embarrass them in their own house, but do not lose faith I will turn it around this week with a couple locks.
(21)West Virginia Mountaineers at Colorado Buffaloes
8:30 PM ET, September 18, 2008
Folsom Field , Boulder , CO
Spread: West Virginia -3
My Pick: The Mountaineers are coming off a humiliating loss to Eastern Carolina and didn’t look at all like the team that won the Fiesta Bowl last year. They have 8 returning starters and freshly signed head coach Bill Stewart has already proven that he is the man for the job. Regardless of QB Pat White’s performance last week he is still a great quarterback that suffered a minor setback. Noel Devine should again become their main threat on the ground and Arlic Arnett should again become a deep threat against a Colorado secondary that has of yet to be tested. Colorado looks like the better team on paper and playing at home should make them confident, but they really haven’t played anyone yet, I mean wins over Eastern Washington and Colorado State are not really something to brag about. QB Hawkins has stepped up to the challenge as they seem to be a passing oriented team as they rank 57th in the nation compared to WVU’s 107th. These teams have never met before so its going to be interesting, but I think you have to go with proven talent in this case which the Mountaineers cleary have. Take WVU and give the 3 points.
Akron Zips at Army Black Knights
1:00 PM ET, September 20, 2008
Michie Stadium , West Point , NY
Spread: Akron -10
My Pick: Yes you read that right, Akron -10!!! and with good reason. When you compare these 2 teams on paper it looks like it should a one sided beatdown handed out by the Zips. Akron QB Chris Jacquemain is a passing machine with 756 yards and 6 TD’s in only 3 games. The only reason they don’t have a better record is their suspect defense that gives up TD’s like they are going out of style. You can bet he will be hooking up with WR’s Deryn Bowser and Andre Jones who he has managed to maintain a pretty balanced distribution with while keeping opposing secondarys on their toes. Army is having a rough year averaging under 10 points a game and it seems that no one has stepped up to be the leader and play maker on that team Junior QB Carson Williams is subpar at best, but really doesn’t have much to work with. Starting Full Back Collin Mooney is only averaging 3.3 yards a carry and thus does little to help his QB out. Alot of the problem could be at the O line that is not providing the protection of gaps they need. The Army defense is laughable and there will be nothing they can do to stop Akron in air. The Akron Zips are the play, don’t let the -10 scare you, this should be an easy blowout, I’m looking for 42-10 Zips!
