The last major of the year, it seems like the season just flew by.  The 2007 PGA Championship will be held at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The world’s best players will tee it up at this years final major, looking to improve their points position heading into the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedExCup later this month.summer hills PGA Championship Preview

The return of the PGA Championship to Southern Hills Country Club marks a record fourth time that the year’s final major will be decided in Tulsa, Okla. While the scores may not indicate it, do not be surprised if the 89th PGA is the most complete major championship examination of 2007.   Southern Hills might be a mere 7,131 yards, but the par-70 layout is chalk full of nasty challenges.  Its series of rolling tree-lined par-4s are a considerable challenge as they bend and turn while the ground on which they run twists in odd directions. The greens have such pitch that they favor only the most well-struck approach shots, even if they have to be kept relatively soft lest they perish in the August heat. Deciphering the breaks on those putting surfaces makes Southern Hills the equal of Augusta and Oakmont.

Tiger is of course the heavy favorite as he has yet to win a major this year and has gone only 2 seasons his entire career without winning at least one major during the year.  Also you have to consider how he just destroyed the field on the last day of the Bridgestone Invitational last week winning by 8 strokes and as he was the only golfer in negative numbers.  I mean the way they he just domininated like he did on the last day of the tourney was something special, Firestone is no kiddie course and he went out and played it with the ease of a 3 legged man in an ass kicking contest.  I think that Tiger could go out and do what it takes to win this week but I will be rooting for an underdog without a doubt.

In the 3 previous majors this year we have had all 1st time major winners which on the Sunday creates alot of buzz and is in fact good for golf!  I’m tired of Tiger winning majors.  I would look at some players that have been playing well recently and are due.  Some names that come to mind are Sergio Garcia and KJ Choi.  Although Garcia had a complete meltdown at the British Open he was playing well enough on a tough course to tie for 1st and for the simple fact that this guys needs to vindicate himself for the Open catastrophe and step up and win one of these.  KJ Choi is one to watch simply because he has been playing really well and consistant, he just won a tourney a couple weeks ago and has been placing in the top 10 all year.  He is waaaaay over due and it would probably be the highlight of his long career to finally get a major trophy for the display case.

In any event I would make it intresting and bet on some big underdogs to win.  Tiger will no doubt be on the leaderboard on Sunday but hes not invincible and another out of nowhere come from behind win by an underdog is exactly what golf needs to ride the ever increasing wave of popularity that it has enjoyed with the arrival of Tiger Woods to the sport.
