sergio Sergio Meltdown Yet Again!!!On Saturday night I had remarked to a friend that I hope Sergio doesn’t go and get drunk in the club house and then piss it down his leg in the final round.

Well, well big surprise…. Sergio has yet again, let the win slip through his hands.  And he had all the help he could ask for from his competition.  A nobody from Argentina by the name of Andres Romero, gave everybody a scare when he virtuall y came out of nowhere to take the lead at -9 with only 2 holes left, and what does he do? He goes off and implodes from the pressue and double bogeys 17 and bogeys 18 to finish -6 and ultimately take 3rd.  So by this time it is a race between Sergio and Padraig Herrington who are both see-sawing between 1st and 2nd.  Then Paddy-9 steps up to what some say is the toughest hole in England, the 18th at Carnoustie, his tee shot goes wide right and looks as if it will bounce over a bridge but at the last second……gulp in the drink.  Now Paddy is shooting his 3rd shot and low and behold into the drink again.  He finally finished the hole with a double bogey dropping down to -7 while Sergio had just finished the 17th at -8.  So yet again  it looks like Sergio has lucked out and all he needs to do is hole out with a par to win by one stroke.  Your would think that would be an easy feat given that he had pared 18 each of the previous 3 days.  However, this was a different Sergio Garcia then we had been watching lead everyday of the tournament thus far, this was the Sergio we are accustomed to seeing, Sergio “choke artist” Garcia.  So long story short Sergio did not make par, he missed an 8 foot putt that would have secured his vistory and instead bogeyed and was forced into a 4 hole playoff with Paddy.  They played the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th holes, now I know what your thinking, they just got done playing these same holes, they know the layout, and how to play each hole, this should be no problem……Then Sergio tees off and pulls it left into the deep rough.  Needless to say he bogeyed the hole while Paddy birdied it.  It was all over from then on, Paddy could not be swayed and Sergio could not make up the strokes.

This leads to the next question,  what happened Sergio?……. In the past I had taken the position that whenever Sergio was leading going into the club house on Saturday and then pissed it down his leg on Sunday was due to a hangover of the combonation of liquor, female groupies, and arrogance.  Now I feel that it is much more than that, this guy was leading at every stage of the Open Championship and it all came down to one putt on the last hole to win it.  It never should have come to that, the truth is is that Sergio played like crap on Sunday and put himself in the do or die position, he shot +3 on the last day when everyone else around him was improving their scores and their positions in the money.  What stopped him from completing what is otherwise a superb tournament performance on a very difficult course?………What? I’m asking YOU…….What happened to Sergio?
