Both the Cleveland Browns (1-2 SU) and Chicago Bears (1-2 SU) will look to improve upon their 2011 preseason record against the NFL odds when they meet up Thursday, September 1st in their final tune-up before the regular season slate commences. Kick-off from Soldier Field in Chicago, IL is set for 8:00 ET with the team’s local stations picking up the live TV coverage.

Bookmaker NFL Opening Odds
Cleveland Browns (+2) -110
Chicago Bears (-2) -110
Over/Under 37

The Browns kicked off their 2011 exhibition slate with a 27-17 home win and cover against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. QB Colt McCoy completed 9-of-10 passes for 135 yards and a score, and the Browns defense returned a fumble to the house in the 2nd half to secure the first win of the HC Pat Shurmur regime.

Since then however, Cleveland has yet to tally another win, either SU or ATS, nor look as impressive as it did in its first live game action against another opponent. Though they exploded out of the gates and looked well on their way towards covering once again at home versus Detroit, the Lions stormed all the way back and stole a 30-28 outright win and cover by outscoring the Browns 17-7 in the second half.

Last week, McCoy was at his worst only completing half of his passes for 89 yards with no TDs and an INT. The Eagles defense shut the first team offense out over the course of the first three quarters before Cleveland posted a pair of meaningless TDs to make the final score a bit more respectable, but still came up short in covering the closing seven-point NFL betting odds.

Like tonight’s opponent, Chicago stands 1-2 SU in the exhibition season, but unlike the Browns, the Bears are yet to put forth a lone good showing as of yet. Chicago sleepwalked its way to a 10-3 SU win and cover as 2.5-point home chalk versus Buffalo in NFLX Week 1 action, but even in the win, Chicago fans and bettors had to endure watching its pathetic O-Line allow Bills defenders to sack their QBs a whopping nine times.

In its follow up to its Week 1 preseason win, the Bears went out and got stomped in the New Meadowlands 41-13 by the New York Giants. Though the O-Line showed a bit more cohesiveness by only allowing one sack, the defense was gouged by RB Brandon Jacobs and company en route to giving up 218 yards on the ground including a 97 yard TD scamper by rookie Da’Rel Scott.

Lovie Smith did manage the NFL odds cover in last week’s 14-13 road loss at Tennessee to move to 15-16 SU & 12-17-3 ATS all time in the preseason as Bears head coach, but even though Chicago outgained the Titans 416-220, they couldn’t make the most of the decisive yardage advantage.

These teams have squared off in the exhibition season each of the last two years with the Bears scoring the 26-23 home win and cover as 2.5-point home favorites back in 2009 and the Browns winning 13-10 as two-point choices at home last season.

Chicago’s 3-1 SU & ATS as a home chalk of three-points or less the L/3 seasons, while the Browns are just 3-4 SU & ATS as a preseason road NFL betting odds underdog during that same time frame.
