Alabama rallied for the 21-17 victory vs. LSU on a 28-yard touchdown pass from A.J. McCarron to T.J. Yeldon with 51 seconds left vs. one of the very few defenses in the country that is on par with the Tide’s defense on the . Now Texas A&M is having a fine season while losing to only Florida and LSU, but we do not feel that the Aggies’ defense is good enough to compete with an established SEC kingpin.
Current Line at Bookmaker:
Alabama Crimson Tide: -13½
Alabama was taken by surprise by the passing of LSU’s Zach Mettenberger last week, as he threw for an amazing 298 yards vs. a Tide team that still ranks eighth on the CFB lines in pass defense at 162.6 yards per game and ninth in passing average at 5.6 yards per attempt, as while Mettenberger always had the ability, he had looked like a deer in headlights in his previous SEC games.
Now some may simply assume that since Alabama struggled to stop Mettenberger, they should be vulnerable vs. Johnny Manziel here right? Well, he huge difference is that while Mettenberger saved his career game so far for the Tide, Alabama is fully aware of what Manziel could do and can game plan for him accordingly. After all, the Tide were second in the nation in passing defense prior to last week.
The LSU game even dropped Alabama to second in the country in total defense and second in rushing defense, although the Tide still lead in scoring defense at 9.1 points per game. This is still a world class defense, and the Alabama offense is averaging 38.4 points and has taken advantage of suspect defenses all year.
Now Texas A&M ranks fifth in the country in total offense at 559.6 yards per game and is averaging 44.7 points per CFB lines contest, but the only time the Aggies faced a defense comparable to Alabama, they only put up 19 points in a loss to LSU. In fact, with the other loss coming to Florida 20-17, it can be said that Texas A&M failed vs. the two best defenses it has faced so far, and both losses came at home.
Remember that this is the first season that the Aggies have been members of the SEC, so it is no accident that they have had trouble beating the top teams in the conference. This is a conference that requires great defense to compete, and although Texas A&M is improved defensively compared to its final years in the Big 12, it still has a ways to go before beating the types of Alabama.
Free Play: Some may expect a CFB lines letdown by Alabama after winning the SEC Game of the Year in dramatic fashion, but the Tide know that they cannot afford one with three other unbeaten teams ready to claim to top spot in the rankings.
