There is a very good chance that Baylor (21-3, 7-12 ATS) could be riding a two-game losing streak coming into this contest, but regardless of Saturday’s result at Missouri on the CBB odds, we like the Bears to roll vs. Iowa State (17-7, 12-7-1 ATS) at the Ferrell Center in Waco, TX on Monday, February 13th at 7:00 ET on ESPNU.
Baylor is coming off of a 68-54 blowout loss here at home to Kansas Wednesday in a game that was not even that close, and Baylor has a tough trip to Columbia coming Saturday vs. a Missouri team that beat the Bears here in Waco earlier this season. Either way, we like Baylor to win comfortably against Monday’s CBB odds, as they will either be looking to stop the bleeding or build upon on a nice road win.
Iowa State is a surprising 17-7, but the Cyclones did lose a game we expected them to win at Oklahoma State Tuesday and their weak two-point defense is a major issue vs. a team like Baylor. Also, the Cyclones’ superstar Royce White is coming off of two straight subpar games, so perhaps teams have figured out how to defend him.
Baylor seems to be taking a lot of flack for a team that has three losses, and that will only get worse if it loses at Missouri Saturday, as it would mean that the four CBB betting losses incurred by Baylor this season would be to Kansas twice and Missouri twice. Then again, there are worse things than being the third best team in the Big 12 behind those two great teams that are both ranked in the top 10.
Baylor is still ranked 15th overall on the Pomeroy Ratings and the Bears are well balanced, ranking 13th in the country in offensive efficiency and 27th in defensive efficiency. The Bears have faced a schedule that ranks 33rd in SOS according to Pomeroy so they have met every challenge outside of Lawrence and Columbia so far.
We do not expect that to change here as the Bears rank 27th in the land in effective field goal percentage while hitting on 51.5 percent of their two-point attempts, and they can potentially dominate the Iowa State inferior defense.
The Cyclones are led on the CBB odds by super sophomore Royce White, who certainly knows how to fill up a stat sheet at both ends of the court. White leads Iowa State in points, assists, rebounds and field goal percentage on the offensive end, and he also leads the team in steals and blocks on the defensive end.
However, White scored just three points and took one shot two games ago at Oklahoma, and although he scored 15 points in the loss at Oklahoma State Tuesday, he shot just 6-of-16 from the floor.
The biggest key to this game though is that an otherwise solid Cyclones’ team is ranked 236th nationally in two-point defense at 49.4 percent, and playing in Waco doesn’t help.
